J109 - Pandan Reservoir year-end update

Pandan Reservoir is the last stop of phase 2 of the Jurong Region Line (JRL). Progress here has come some way along with the first viaduct pier now visible on site. Come 8th January 2023, the junction of Teban Gardens & Jurong Town Hall Road will be shifted further north to form a cross-junction with Pandan Gardens. Preparatory work is currently underway to shift the junction & extend the existing alignment of Teban Gardens to facilitate station works.

J109 - Jurong Town Hall year-end update

 The base of Jurong Town Hall station is beginning to take shape with the footings now becoming visible. The station will sit on the side table of the road and have an elevated concourse level that will be linked to further exits across the road by an overhead bridge. With this, the platforms will be located at level 3 of the station structure.

J109 - Toh Guan year-end update

extend all the way to the Jurong East junction where the contract splits to allow work under
contracts J120 and J110. It then resumes along Jurong Town Hall Road.

Toh Guan is the first of 3 stations to be built under contract J109. This contract in particular is a little peculiar, being split in the middle with contracts J120 and J110 for the construction of the Jurong East integrated transport hub & Jurong East interchange station respectively. Not entirely sure why the contract was packaged this way, but we're here for updates anyway. A recent road diversion in November has now paved the way for work on station foundations to commence once the former roadway can be cleared.

J108 - Bukit Batok West year-end update

Bukit Batok West station is the third station to be built under contract J108. Located next to the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), the station has seen slower progress compared to its sister stations Tengah Park and Tengah Plantation. Nonetheless the site has been cleared and piling works have commenced at the station site. A new, temporary ramp is being constructed to allow for the demolition of the existing ramp to facilitate construction works.

Contract J108 is for the construction of 3 stations on the Jurong Region Line (JRL), however we will only be covering the 2 stations within Tengah for this contract in this post. No worries, the next station will be covered in the following post so no losing out there. While contract J108 may fall under the second phase of the line, works at this contract are progressing at lightning speed.

J107 - Tawas year-end update

Whilst progress at Tawas station is slower than sister station Gek Poh being built under the same contract, there have been significant changes to the site. Station piers are now clearly visible and have been cast to the concourse level height. However, there are still no viaduct piers visible in the area. Nonetheless, when compared with images from a year prior, there has been significant change from the empty vacant land that was there formerly.

Gek Poh may be a small sleepy suburb within Jurong West, but the progress of construction at the station site here is hardly anything to snooze at. Piers for both the viaduct and station have sprung up and are continuing to make progress ahead of viaduct construction work that is likely to commence next year.

J106 - Boon Lay year-end update

Boon Lay station site is one that has undergone tremendous transformation over the course of the year. Traffic diversions have been implemented to allow for construction to take place over the location of the former roadway as there would not have been sufficient space to keep the roadway operational while works are carried out. The station itself will be an engineering feat, with the platforms elevated 2 stories above the existing East-West Line (EWL) tracks. To ensure that train services on the EWL are not disrupted, temporary protective enclosures have been progressively installed on the viaduct of the operational train line.

J105 - Bahar Junction year-end update

Bahar Junction is a complicated station through and through. No aspect of it is easy - be it at either the construction or revenue operations stages being one of the first T-junction stations on a single service. The site is labyrinth of road diversions, lane re-markings and construction. Most of the works are focused on utility diversion and station foundation works. Up to recently, there were no signs of any station supporting piers.

J105 - Jurong West year-end update

Station support piers are now visible in the road median at Jurong West station. These piers will enable the concourse level to be elevated above the roadway below. Similar to Corporation station to the east, we expect that crossheads may be constructed next to allow precast beams to be laid, forming the concourse slab level.

Progress at Hong Kah station has been somewhat slow, hence it may not be immediately apparent how far along the station has come in its construction. This is especially so when the piers under construction in neighbouring contract J102 loom over, with a launch gantry to construct the viaduct already locked into position. The stretch along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3 has been fully diverted allowing for construction works to commence in the road median. As such, foundation works are taking place along the entire stretch of roadway. Several auger machines are dotted throughout the work site to commence bored piling for the pier foundation piles.

The area around Jurong East station is vastly different from how it used to look years ago. Especially in recent years, the area has transformed once again. The most recent addition being a new covered walkway linking from the southern end of the existing station concourse, towards the JCube & Jurong East Central town centre. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) & contract J110 contractor - Daewoo-YongNam joint venture - announced on Monday that from 18th December 2022, the existing escalator and staircase leading to Exit A at the station will be closed. Instead, a new stairway will connect from the southern side of the unpaid concourse to link commuters accessing JCube & the Jurong East Central town centre.

J102 - Choa Chu Kang year-end update

The construction of Choa Chu Kang station involves the building of 2 new island platforms to serve the existing North-South Line (NSL) and the new Jurong Region Line (JRL). Work is underway to form the base of the station, which is likely to be one of the few 2-level stations sitting on the ground for the JRL. Most of the JRL stations will feature 2 levels, however the concourse levels should be elevated off street level necessitating the extra footing work before work can begin on the station levels proper.

J102 - Peeking at the progress within Tengah

It was a drab, rainy morning. The build-to-order (BTO) flats have risen quicker than the progress on the Jurong Region Line (JRL) within Tengah is visible. But from a high vantage point, just barely visible to the eye, was a view of some of the work for the line within Tengah. Mostly out of reach at the moment, work has been going on steadily to get viaduct piers at the southern end of contract J102 ready. As they progress further north, they get much trickier as the line's branches merge at the centerpiece station of the line - Tengah.

J106 - Update on site progress

We are back at contract J106 to view the progress in the middle of the month. Despite the previous visit being fairly recent, there's a fair bit of visible progress at the site. More piers can be seen, apart from the 2 completed ones at the northern end of the contract. From the north, the third pier is half-cast whilst the sixth was having formwork being done to facilitate the casting works. The stubs of piers four and five from the northern contract boundary are visible as well.

GEK POH VILLE - A sleepy suburb in Jurong West, the quiet neighbourhood has recently seen a fair amount of upheaval with construction works for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) taking place along the median of one of the major, arterial roads serving the area. The future Gek Poh JRL station will sit just outside the Gek Poh Shopping Centre.

The completed piers within J106's domain are located at the northern end of the contract site. Currently, 2 fully cast piers are visible standing tall above the road.

Jurong West station has been progressing steadily and most likely is the second most advanced station currently under construction along the Jurong Region Line (JRL) after Tengah Plantation. This station only falls into second place as the concourse slab crossheads are not yet under construction unlike the former.

Tengah Plantation station under contract J108 has been progressing steadily since we found a good vantage point from which to view the station earlier this year in June. From this viewpoint, we have been able to document the station's piers going up from mere rebar to concrete structures that are now progressing to have the concourse level crossheads cast.

J106 - Roads back & now for the bicycle park

In our previous visit to Boon Lay, we covered the preparations for the road diversion. Last weekend, the road was again shifted, but away from the temporary split configuration. Both bounds are now back together again, side by side. This shift will allow the former location of the roadway to be transformed into a work site to enable the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) station above.

Works at Gek Poh station have been progressing steadily since our last visit here almost half a year ago. Foundation pits can be seen dug for the installation of bored piles that will serve to support the station piers located in the road median. Further up north, the former Pioneer Primary School site can be seen cleared to allow a clear path towards Tawas station.

The construction site under contract J108 near Tengah Park station has come a long way in the past 9 months. The first viaduct piers for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) were spotted along Bukit Batok Road here. These piers now support the first seen segmental box girders which are being bonded ahead of viaduct construction. October seems to be the target month for several contracts to begin construction of viaducts with several circulars for other contracts also seeming to indicate this as the start date for this phase of construction.

J106 - Reuniting the road

Following the successful road diversion phase 1 at the contract J106 site, contractor China Communications Construction Co. will be moving the southbound lanes of Jurong West Street 64 atop the canal. Part of the canal has been decked over to allow the roadway to be shifted atop. This allows the former area occupied by the roads to be freed up for station foundation works. Once the roadway has been diverted, residents in the area can expect the asphalt and any supporting utilities (e.g. drains, lighting, cabling) to be moved out of the way. The cleared site can then be used for bored piling works before the frame of the station can come up.

Several of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) civil contracts have their casting yards co-located within Tengah new town near the site of the Tengah Depot. These are for contracts J103, J105, J106 & J107. Contract J102's casting yard is also within Tengah new town, but located at the other end near the junction of Brickland Road & Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3. Lastly we know that contract J108's casting yard, also located within Tengah, is located near the Tengah junction where the east & west routes diverge. This leaves a number of contracts whose casting yards are not yet accounted for - namely J109, J110, J111, J112, J113 & J115A.

J113 - NTU Bridge is coming down

This is looking eastwards.

As part of works for the Nanyang Crescent station located right in the heart of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), a pedestrian overhead bridge connecting the North Spine & National Institute of Education (NIE) has to be removed. The bridge would have been a common sight for many of the students over the years, located right where both public bus routes converge within the university campus. We visited the site on the last day of the bridge's operation.

J106 - The road has parted

Following works that commenced a day prior on 9 September, the northbound carriageway of Jurong West Street 64 was diverted on top of the canal running parallel to the roadway. The road diversion will free up space for the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) station which will be located on top of the street, straddling the existing East-West Line (EWL) station and tracks. In this post, we take a look at the changes implemented on 10 September at the site.

J105 - Piers at Jurong West

It's been a while since we visited Jurong West station site, so we're making a stop by to check out the progress here. Since our last visit, there is some visible progress by way of piers which are beginning to take shape. One prominent pier column shaft base has been cast and it will be a matter of time before it emerges from the sheet pile pit it is currently in, much like a seedling sprouting.

J106 - Road diversion at Boon Lay

According to the contractor for J106, works to facilitate a road diversion will begin today and complete by tomorrow. This is to allow the space currently taken by Jurong West Street 64 to used for the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) station at Boon Lay. J102 - Choa Chu Kang West diversions

Also under contract J102 is neighbouring station Choa Chu Kang West. Located along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3, works have been on-going to shift the carriageways apart to allow work to commence in the road median. Most of the viaduct piers will be located here, with the exception of a few portal piers (piers that straddle either side of the road and use a horizontal beam in between to support the viaduct). The station will also be located in the road median, offering access to either side of the road via linkbridge - akin to stations like Clementi, Dover, Commonwealth and Queenstown on the East-West Line.

It has been a while since we've come to Choa Chu Kang and things are progressing fairly well. Foundation works are well under way at the station site where 2 new island platforms are being tacked on to the existing station for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) and to facilitate cross-platform transfers to the southbound North-South Line (NSL) track. Further along, work is also underway for the foundations of the piers towards Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3.
