J106 - An update in Q1 2025

A lot has been happening at Boon Lay station on the East-West Line (EWL) as it prepares to be upgraded into an interchange with the upcoming Jurong Region Line (JRL). In addition to the new station being built, the existing station is undergoing several changes to cope with the increased passenger loads and commuter traffic. These works are being carried out under contract J106 which oversees the construction of the new station as well as the addition & alteration works to the existing EWL station. Milestones hit by the contract this past quarter include the completion of the roof frame installation, commencement of the construction of a replacement staircase within the existing station and the beginning of reinstatement works along Jurong West Street 64. We'll explore all these in greater detail after the jump.

J106 / Boon Lay - A 2024 progress report

 

To wrap the year, we've started a series called the 2024 progress report. This series aims to recap all the accomplishments and changes made through the work at the various sites over the year. Here are the other parts for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) thus far:

• Contract J101 for Tengah Depot
• Contract J102 for Choa Chu Kang, Choa Chu Kang West & Tengah stations
• Contract J103 for Hong Kah & Corporation stations
• Contract J105 for Jurong West & Bahar Junction stations

This contract has seen a lot of progress through 2024. Some of the highlights would include the completion of viaduct segment launching, the commencement of viaduct span preparation for handover to track laying contractor and the commencement of exit construction. Contractor China Communications Construction Co (CCCC) has been working steadily and safely in spite of all the challenges faced along the contract's length. We recap all of these after the jump.

Contract J106 for the construction of Boon Lay station and viaducts for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) has seen steady progress at its site through Q2 of the year. Through the quarter, the station building has continued to take shape with the structure rising from the concourse level on the third floor to the platform level on the fourth floor. Eventually, both halves of the station to the north and south of the existing East-West Line (EWL) viaduct will meet above the operational line.

The Boon Lay Jurong Region Line (JRL) will be one of the tallest when completed in 2027, with the station spanning across 4 levels. Over the past quarter, works have progressed on the station's superstructure, quickly gaining height on both the northern and southern sections. The two sections will eventually meet in the middle, right atop of the existing East-West Line (EWL) viaducts. Elsewhere along contract J106's construction sites, work has been underway to complete the gaps in the viaduct spans where the movement expansion joints are located. Contract J106 has been bustling with work making significant progress over the past quarter. The station building is now becoming visible with the southern and northern halves using various pier support methods to keep the station elevated above Jurong West Street 64. Viaduct segment launching has also made significant progress with most spans installed. The only exception would be the spans that are supported by the movement & expansion joint piers. The installation of viaduct spans on these piers will require the use of trestles - a sort of frame that can hold the viaduct segments in place that is supported on the ground - and thus these spans are being left for the last parts of viaduct construction.

Okay, this one is going to be a big update as there has been a lot of progress since our last update. For a more condensed update, do check out our Instagram or Facebook posts. Work has progressed fairly quickly within the last quarter over at contract J106 for the construction of Boon Lay Jurong Region Line (JRL) station and associated viaducts along Jurong West Street 64. Most of the viaduct piers have since been cast with approximately 4 to 5 left, whose columns have yet to be cast. The remaining viaduct piers are at various stages of completion, with some viaduct spans completed. The station area has progressed a little slower given its complexity but the first few pier supports there are beginning to take shape as well.

We now check in on contract J106 for the construction of Boon Lay station and associated viaducts. Apart from contracts J102 and J108, this contract was another to begin viaduct construction work early. Instead of using a launching gantry to lift segmental box girders into position, this contract instead uses the lifting frame method. Let's check in on the progress made in Q1 of 2023.

Boon Lay station site is one that has undergone tremendous transformation over the course of the year. Traffic diversions have been implemented to allow for construction to take place over the location of the former roadway as there would not have been sufficient space to keep the roadway operational while works are carried out. The station itself will be an engineering feat, with the platforms elevated 2 stories above the existing East-West Line (EWL) tracks. To ensure that train services on the EWL are not disrupted, temporary protective enclosures have been progressively installed on the viaduct of the operational train line.

We are back at contract J106 to view the progress in the middle of the month. Despite the previous visit being fairly recent, there's a fair bit of visible progress at the site. More piers can be seen, apart from the 2 completed ones at the northern end of the contract. From the north, the third pier is half-cast whilst the sixth was having formwork being done to facilitate the casting works. The stubs of piers four and five from the northern contract boundary are visible as well.

We seem to be having a thing going with piers being fully cast and ready as of late. Here's some continuing coverage of viaduct piers from contract J105 in our previous post to contract J106. The completed piers within J106's domain are located at the northern end of the contract site. Currently, 2 fully cast piers are visible standing tall above the road.

In our previous visit to Boon Lay, we covered the preparations for the road diversion. Last weekend, the road was again shifted, but away from the temporary split configuration. Both bounds are now back together again, side by side. This shift will allow the former location of the roadway to be transformed into a work site to enable the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) station above.

Following the successful road diversion phase 1 at the contract J106 site, contractor China Communications Construction Co. will be moving the southbound lanes of Jurong West Street 64 atop the canal. Part of the canal has been decked over to allow the roadway to be shifted atop. This allows the former area occupied by the roads to be freed up for station foundation works. Once the roadway has been diverted, residents in the area can expect the asphalt and any supporting utilities (e.g. drains, lighting, cabling) to be moved out of the way. The cleared site can then be used for bored piling works before the frame of the station can come up.

Following works that commenced a day prior on 9 September, the northbound carriageway of Jurong West Street 64 was diverted on top of the canal running parallel to the roadway. The road diversion will free up space for the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) station which will be located on top of the street, straddling the existing East-West Line (EWL) station and tracks. In this post, we take a look at the changes implemented on 10 September at the site.

According to the contractor for J106, works to facilitate a road diversion will begin today and complete by tomorrow. This is to allow the space currently taken by Jurong West Street 64 to used for the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) station at Boon Lay. Here's a look back at all the work that has taken place thus far.

As it has been approximately 4 years since the Jurong Region Line (JRL)'s final alignment was announced to the public in May 2018, several images of the stations have been made available showing the minor details that distinguish each station from another. Whilst using a basic design skeleton that features a vaulted roof supported along the sides by several columns, each station manages to retain some level of individuality. Several videos have since allowed us to catch a glimpse of the designs of the upcoming stations.

JRL1 Construction update - Q3 2021

It has been a few months since our last update and unfortunately, there has not been too much progress on the line's construction. Majority of the works are still focused on the preliminary stages of utility diversion and site preparation. At some sites, there has not been much visible progress while others show a bit more visible work. In this update we'll do our best to give an overall summary of the progress.

A recent visit to the contract J106 worksite earlier in January showed a new circular being issued by contractor China Communications Construction Company. In the circular, several dates for key work items have been pushed back.

The site around Boon Lay station has undergone some changes since the update of the site of the future Jurong Region Line (JRL) interchange station. Since our last visit to Contract J106's site, more site offices have sprung up in the vicinity of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) Project Office and the main contractor has also issued a new circular detailing upcoming works.

Contract update - J106 Boon Lay

Contact J106 for the construction of Boon Lay station on the Jurong Region Line (JRL) was awarded in February 2020 to China Communications Construction Company. Since the award date, there has yet to be much movement at the site of the future station which will sit perpendicularly a level above the existing East West Line train tracks.

February has been a milestone month in the progress of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) with the award of 4 major contracts for the line. These include contracts for supply of trains for the line as well as the construction of 2 stations and 2 interchanges.
