Contract update - J106 Boon Lay

Contact J106 for the construction of Boon Lay station on the Jurong Region Line (JRL) was awarded in February 2020 to China Communications Construction Company. Since the award date, there has yet to be much movement at the site of the future station which will sit perpendicularly a level above the existing East West Line train tracks.

A semi-permanent site office, located on the grounds of the former Temporary Boon Lay bus interchange, is the single lone development in the area. A big signboard near the entrance of the site office states that it is for the JRL Civil Team 1. We also understand that this is the first of multiple site/project offices that will be housed in this particular area, with each being established next to each other in the remaining space available.

Communiques and circulars have also been seen at the lift lobbies of nearby blocks, offering updates into the current project status. One sighted at block 661D states that the contract is moving into the pre-construction phase where the contractor will be performing investigative works to locate utilities and pipes that will be required to be re-routed in order to prevent service disruption once station construction commences.

Another circular sighted at block 664B states that the contractor will be conducting pre-construction surveys of the surrounding structures. This will act as a baseline from which comparisons will be made once construction of the station and viaduct structures commence. The contractor will then be able to determine if any cracks, tilts or movement of surrounding structures are incurred due to ground disturbance or settlement during the construction stage.

Whilst the Covid situation may have impacted the construction industry and ability for such projects to proceed, the J106 contractor seems to have an idea of how to proceed with works in a timely manner. The pre-construction surveys are just the beginning and construction works will ramp up over time as the project progresses.
