The Six Stages to building an elevated MRT line - Introduction

It has been a while since the last elevated line was constructed in Singapore, with the Tuas West Extension on the East-West Line being the most recent addition back in 2016 following the completion of construction along the line, and there after its opening in 2017. The city is now receiving its first new elevated line since things went underground with the third line in the network, the North East Line (NEL). What does it take to build an elevated system? Much of our recent rail construction has taken place underground, hence works may not be as visible as that of an elevated line. Join us as we deep dive into the stages of construction of an elevated line in a six-part series that gives you a better understanding of how the line is constructed.

J102 - Flythrough videos

Video by Juan Almighty

Recently we came across several render videos for contract J102. The first video shows the renders of Choa Chu Kang, Choa Chu Kang West & Tengah stations which are being built by contractor Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (STEC). Subsequent videos show the process of unloading components of the launch gantry at the storage site, assembly & lifting of the launch gantry used for viaduct construction and the construction of the base slab at Choa Chu Kang station.

J103 - Corporation Q1 2023 progress

5 February 2023 - An aerial view of the Corporation station site.

Contract J103 was one of the first contracts for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) to be awarded. One of the stations under this contract is Corporation station located next to the site of the former Jurong Junior College. Work on the station has been progressing steadily with crossheads for the station piers being constructed. This will serve to support the station's concourse level via T-beams which will be installed between the crossheads, forming the flooring of the said level.

J108 - Second viaduct span

4 February 2023 - A view of the launch gantry with a nearly completed second span.

Reader Alfred Yeo Chi Jin, a resident of Bukit Batok West, kindly sent us a series of images of the contract J108 launch gantry. Good progress has been made with a second span nearly completed. The second span starts where the first currently ends, with the segmental box girder that has been bonded with the viaduct pier. The other end of the span will be located at a movement joint pier which uses bearings to support the viaduct instead of being bonded to the segmental box.
