J113 & J115A / Nanyang Technological University stations - A 2024 progress report

As the Jurong Region Line (JRL) comes to the end of its run in Peng Kang Hill, so do we in our JRL 2024 progress report. This report marks the completion of our coverage for the line's progress updates over 2024. Before we jump into that, you can recap the rest of the line's progress in the various reports we've produced this month:

In our final update report, we cover the remaining two contracts for the phase 3's northern section in Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Served by three stations, the first two are being constructed under contract J113 and the final station under revised contract J115A. All three stations and two contracts were awarded to the same contractor - Hwa Seng Builder - easing the process of construction and standardisation of noise mitigation & environmental control measures. Some milestones that the contracts in this section have accomplished include the commencement of station building construction and commencement of viaduct segment launching works. More details can be found after the jump!

JW3 - Nanyang Gateway
The first of the three stations is called Nanyang Gateway. Frankly, we've always had difficulty remembering the station names between this and the JW4 station. Does anyone else face similar issues? Perhaps compass points might have been helpful? In any case, over the course of the year, the station has seen beam launching works take place for the formation of the concourse level slab. At the beginning of the year, the station's columns had yet to even be cast. By the end of the year, the columns at concourse level were being constructed. That has been some truly remarkable progress!

15 January 2024 - A view of the station building along Nanyang Avenue in early 2024. Auger
machines were still on site for the construction of bored piles.

14 December 2024 - A view of the station building along Nanyang Avenue in end 2024. One
side of the viaduct leading up to the station had been completed, while the remaining side
would be constructed after a road diversion. The station building itself now spanned across
the future roadway, with the concourse slab completed.

residential halls.

residential halls can be seen on the right.

The viaducts at both the station's eastern & western ends had made significant advancements as well. At the station's eastern approach, the majority of the viaduct piers and spans had been completed. A short segment will need to be constructed after the roadway below has been diverted to allow for the construction of the viaduct pier. Once this is completed, it is certain that viaduct span construction would follow swiftly.

14 December 2024 - A view of the eastern approach viaducts under construction. The viaduct
seen is mostly for the Peng Kang Hill-bound track. Viaduct piers for the Choa Chu Kang-bound
track can be seen in the distance, without crossheads yet.

Here, the viaducts can be seen heading towards Nanyang Gateway station.

Over at the western approach, works had been underway outside Hall 8 to construct the viaduct spans as the line climbed up the hill. Significant progress was made with several spans completed over the year.

of the viaduct pier crossheads for subsequent piers can be seen behind.

14 December 2024 - The movement & expansion joint pier crosshead, with viaduct spans for
subsequent piers already completed, in end 2024.

JW4 - Nanyang Crescent
The second station within NTU and of contract J113 is Nanyang Crescent, located between the North Spine and National Institute of Education buildings. The station is sited on the northern side of Nanyang Drive. As the terrain is somewhat hilly, the station's viaducts enter its eastern end elevated and become at-grade level towards the station's centre. The platforms are thus located at ground level, with a lower concourse on the eastern end and an elevated concourse at the centre. At the western end, the line becomes elevated once again, as the hillside drops away.

Through the year, progress at the station has been spectacular. At the beginning of the year, bored piling works were ongoing for the station, especially concentrated on the station's perimeter. By the end of the year, columns and the trackbed for the station could be seen, having completed casting works at various stages.

Viaduct construction near the station had progressed through the year as well. However, viaduct segment launching works here had commenced towards the end of last year, hence this is not an entirely new development.

15 January 2024 - Commencement of viaduct segment launching via the trestle method for a new
viaduct pier.

15 January 2024 - A string of viaduct piers all ready for span construction.

completed.

JW5 - Peng Kang Hill
The final station is being constructed under revised contract J115A. The station was originally packaged as contract J115, which included the full construction of a remote stabling facility (RSF). Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the contract was revised with the RSF to be located next to the station deferred for future development. Stub connections will be included under contract J115A's build out, ready for the day when the RSF becomes a reality. Progress at the station has been a little slower than that of the other 2 NTU stations, due to the contract being the last awarded.

Viaduct construction at the station has progressed from mostly foundational works to structural works. Piers on both the southern and northern side had begun to emerge, with viaduct segment launching works beginning on the northern section.

We've since come to the end of the JRL 2024 progress report updates. Looking back at all the progress made through the year has shown significant advancement through 2024. It also shows that there is still a long way to go before the line will be ready to be open for passenger service. 2025 is undoubtedly sure to bring the first tracks laid on the viaduct segments of the line. We look forward to all that 2025 will bring to the JRL and to seeing you on our Blogs, Instagram & Facebook pages in the coming year. SGMC will be taking a short break to recharge and come back ready to update in the coming year.

This post will also be available on Instagram & Facebook on 23 December 2024.
