J107 / Gek Poh & Tawas - A 2024 progress report

Making headway through our 2024 progress report, we've come to the sixth contract and the final one under the first phase - contract J107. In case you missed them, here are the first five parts of the 2024 progress report thus far:

Contract J107 for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) was won by Chip Eng Seng - Sembawang Design Corporation (CES_SDC) and involves the construction of two stations at Gek Poh and Tawas. Both of the stations will utilise side platform layouts. Significant milestones attained through 2024 have included the completion of casting for all viaduct piers along the contract, the commencement of roof frame installation works at Tawas station and the long span crossing over the Pan Island Expressway reaching the mid-point. We take a closer look at the various accomplishments made in greater detail after the jump.

JW1 - Gek Poh
Gek Poh station is located along Jurong West Street 75, just south of Street 81, directly in front of Gek Poh Shopping Centre - the neighbourhood HDB retail & commercial centre. It serves as a sort of neighbourhood centre. The station is conveniently located along the estate's thoroughfare (and smack in front of one of the team's relatives' home). At the beginning of the year, works were focused on construction of the station's concourse level with the launching of precast crosshead arms and precast beams to form the concourse slab.

By the end of the year, these works had progressed to the platform and trackbed levels instead. A similar process of constructing the platform level crosshead arms was underway while precast beams were lifted into place along the length of the station to form the trackbed. Installation of the beams was approximately 75% complete.

29 February 2024 - An aerial view of the northern part of the station building in early 2024. Work
was focused on the construction of structures for the concourse level, including the central columns
supporting the platform level & trackbed.

7 December 2024 - An aerial view of the northern part of the station building in end 2024. Work
had since progressed to the platform level with the casting of the platform level crosshead arms
and installation of precast beams for the trackbed.

work at the concourse level complete, works focused on the platform level.

Viaduct construction had also shown significant progress. One of the last viaduct piers to be cast for the contract was located along Street 75. By the year's end, all viaduct piers had been cast, including those across the expressway running through the Jurong Innovation District.

21 January 2024 - A view south of Gek Poh station in early 2024. Viaduct columns stood ready
for viaduct segmental launching works.

7 December 2024 - A view south of Gek Poh station in end 2024. Viaduct spans were since
constructed.

2024. All viaduct piers were since completed with viaduct segment launching underway.

contract J105 in end 2024.

in end 2024. Several gaps still remain but are likely to be completed by the first half of 2025.

An engagement session was conducted for residents of Gek Poh estate to update them of the upcoming stages of construction. Contractor CES_SDC highlighted that station works were progressing towards roof frame installation, with reinstatement of roads expected in September 2025. Other works that would be commencing as well included track laying works by the track works contractor.

JW2 - Tawas
Tawas station has had the benefit of being sited on a greenfield site (a site with no existing buildings or structures, a clean slate). This has allowed the station to be constructed rather quickly, with roof frame installation works underway as of end 2024. In the beginning of the year, the station was only beginning work on the installation of precast trackbed beams and construction of the platform level crosshead arms.

installation of trackbed beams and platform level crosshead arms.

were underway.

Immediately south of the station is a long span crossing over the Pan Island Expressway (PIE). Viaduct segment launching had yet to begin at the start of the year. By the end of the year, half of the span had been completed on the south side of the PIE. Segment launching works for the northern side were beginning following completion of the viaduct pier and its crosshead. As the line progressed further south towards Gek Poh station, parapet wall installation works could be seen along completed sections of the viaduct.

29 February 2024 - An aerial view of the PIE crossing in early 2024. The viaduct pier of the
south side of the expressway was still completing casting work while the pier on the northern
side of the expressway was not visible yet.

7 December 2024 - An aerial view of the PIE crossing in end 2024. Viaduct segments had been
launched from the southern pier and launching works were commencing on the northern side
of the expressway.

Parapet walls can be seen installed on completed sections of the viaduct.

7 December 2024 - Parapet walls installed along completed sections of viaduct.

7 December 2024 - More completed section of viaduct with parapet walls installed.

with Jurong West Avenue 5 and onto Jurong West Street 81.

Innovation District.

2024 was a productive year for CES_SDC with several milestones attained. 2025 looks to be an exciting year with the likely handover of section of viaduct to the track laying contractor. We look forward to the achievements to be attained in the coming year.
