J110 & J120 / Jurong East & Integrated transport hub - A 2024 progress report

The final two contracts under Phase 2 of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) are located at Jurong East. Before we dive into the 2 contracts' combined report, here are the reports for other contracts that we've covered thus far:

Milestones for contract J110 for the construction of the Jurong East interchange station have included the commencement of structural works for the upper platform level of the station, commencement of construction of ground level columns for the transfer hub & plaza and the completion of the two viaduct piers to the station's north. On the other hand, milestones for contract J120 have included the progressive expansion of casting works for the in-situ viaduct spans, commencement of casting works for the Integrated Transport Hub (ITH) building structure over the JRL viaducts and the commencement of ITH tower building structure works. More details to follow, after the jump!

JE5 - Jurong East
Expansion & alteration works to the existing Jurong East station to accommodate the new JRL are being carried out under contract J110. The contract will see the addition of new platforms, an expanded concourse area and an integrated transfer hub with a plaza at ground level at the northern end of the station. This transfer hub will connect all platforms via an elevated bridge across almost all the existing viaducts. Also included under the contract are modification works to add more vertical circulation points at the existing platforms.

Where construction works on the station's structure were relegated to the ground level at the beginning of the year, these now stood at either the lower platform or upper platform levels. The northern end was at a slightly more advanced stage of construction with columns supporting the upper platform already cast and work in progress to begin construction of the upper-most level. Towards the southern end, works were still focused on completion of the lower platform level, equivalent to the height of the existing station's platform level, where the existing westbound track would receive a new platform offering direct connectivity to the JRL via a cross-platform transfer.

The contract also includes the construction of two viaduct piers north of the station and roughly where the transfer hub would be located. Progress on these piers is apparent as both have been fully cast, with viaduct span construction due to begin shortly.

29 February 2024 - A view of the Jurong East station from the side in early 2024.

15 December 2024 - A view of the Jurong East station from the side in end 2024. The station's
structure has grown substantially since, blocking the view of the existing westbound platform.

29 February 2024 - A view of the station from the southern end in early 2024.

15 December 2024 - A view of the station from the southern end in end 2024. Works on this end
had reached the lower platform level, which is equivalent to the height of the existing station's
current platforms.

21 January 2024 - A view of the temporary covered linkway towards Jurong Gateway Road in
early 2024.

15 December 2024 - A view of the temporary covered linkway towards Jurong Gateway Road in
end 2024. The exact angle would see the view of the covered linkway obscured by the progress
of the new station's structure.

29 February 2024 - A view of the station's side in early 2024.

15 December 2024 - A view of the station's side in end 2024.

29 February 2024 - A view of the northern end of the station, with the viaduct piers under
construction in early 2024.

15 December 2024 - A view of the northern end of the station, with the viaduct piers completely cast
in end 2024. Trestle structures were being set up for commencement of viaduct span construction.

Other major works at the northern end of the station were for the transfer hub & plaza structure. Roughly around the middle of the year, the base of the ground level columns began to take shape. By the end of the year, these columns had since been cast in preparation for works to begin on the expansion of the existing station's concourse level. In addition, a temporary staircase was being added in to the side near Westgate shopping mall. This might be in anticipation of the transfer hub construction commencing where the current temporary staircase connecting to the covered linkway to Jurong Gateway Road is located.

1 May 2024 - A view of the transfer hub & plaza in mid 2024. Only the footings of the columns
could be seen.

15 December 2024 - A view of the transfer hub & plaza in end 2024. Columns had since been cast
ahead of concourse level construction works.

1 May 2024 - A view of the transfer hub & plaza site, with the two viaduct piers visible towards
the far end of the site under construction.

15 December 2024 - A view of the transfer hub & plaza site, with the two viaduct piers visible
towards the far end of the site completed.

15 December 2024 - A close up view of the two viaduct piers at the far end of the site.

2 June 2024 - A view of the area fronting the Westgate shopping centre in mid 2024.

15 December 2024 - A view of the area fronting the Westgate shopping centre in end 2024. A
temporary staircase was being constructed.

15 December 2024 - A view of the temporary staircase being installed outside Westgate
shopping centre.

15 December 2024 - Another view of the temporary staircase being installed.

15 December 2024 - The connection point of the temporary staircase at the linkbridge connecting
to the Westgate shopping centre.

Contract J120
The second contract in the area is J120, for the construction of the Integrated Transport Hub (ITH) and viaducts through the development. This will see the JRL viaducts cutting through the ITH Tower building, just below the 8th floor deck. Part of the slab for the 8th floor will feature a roof garden which extends over the JRL viaducts. The construction of the support columns extending up from the JRL viaduct piers can begin to be seen towards the end of the year.

In comparison, the beginning of the year only saw one pair of viaduct spans being worked on. In total, this contract will see the construction of approximately 12 viaduct piers and the 11 pairs of viaduct spans linking them together.

1 January 2024 - An aerial view of the viaduct piers & first set of viaduct spans cast in-situ in
early 2024.

15 December 2024 - An aerial view of the viaduct piers, subsequent sets of viaduct spans cast
in-situ & the ITH building's deck being cast in end 2024.

11 January 2024 - A view of the first set of viaduct spans being cast in early 2024.

15 December 2024 - A view of the viaduct spans completed in end 2024. Parapet wall installation
works had commenced but stagnated after, perhaps being used as samples for further works.

26 January 2024 - An aerial view of the contract's work site in early 2024.

15 December 2024 - An aerial view of the contract's work site in end 2024.

26 January 2024 - An aerial view of the contract's work site in early 2024.

15 December 2024 - An aerial view of the contract's work site in end 2024.

With 2025 around the corner, much more progress will become apparent at the site as decent headway has been made through the course of 2024. We should see the completion of viaduct span construction works and the commencement of fit out works ahead of the handover to the trackworks contractor - these would include viaduct waterproofing works and the installation of parapet walls & cable racks. With that, we wrap up the JRL phase 2 progress report!
