J111 & J112 / Jurong Industrial Estate stations - A 2024 progress report

We're on our way to wrapping up the progress made over the Jurong Region Line (JRL) through 2024. Thus far, we have covered the contracts for the stations, depot and viaducts under phases 1 & 2:

We now begin our final posts to conclude the progress report series with 2 more posts covering phase 3's southern and northern sections. This particular report will cover the southern section through the Jurong Industrial Estates.

Phase 3's southern section spans across 2 contracts - J111 & J112, each responsible for two stations. Milestones for the first contract - J111 - include the commencement of viaduct segment launching & construction and the commencement of station concourse level construction. Meanwhile, milestones seen over at the second contract - J112 - have included the commencement of station pier construction at Jurong Hill station and the commencement of viaduct segment launching works. We'll dive a little deeper into the specifics right after the jump.

JS9 - Enterprise
Oh boy, this station has come a long way and is likely to be the most advanced in progress among the stations on this section of the line. In the beginning of the year, there were barely any structures visible at the site. However, by the year's end, most of the work for the concourse level was nearing completion. Viaduct piers, while present at the start of the year, now supported viaduct spans towards the end of the year.

An interesting fact about Enterprise station is that it will be one of the smaller stations along the line featuring one pair of escalators between the concourse & platform - other JRL stations feature between 3 to 4. It will also only have publicly accessible staircase connecting the platform & concourse levels and only 9 pairs of columns supporting the station structure, down from the 10 typical of a JRL station.

To the north of the station is where a lot of the action has been taking place over the year for the construction of viaduct spans. A range of construction techniques were used along this section of the contract that had not been seen in other parts of the line thus far, which includes using a form traveler to construct the viaduct span. This method is being used at the Jurong River crossing, where it is not possible for viaduct segments to be delivered below a lifting frame for hoisting up to the viaduct level and is similar to the method used by Malaysia's contractor for building the marine viaduct of the cross-border Rapid Transit System Link between Woodlands North & Johor Bahru.

Right before the end of the year, a road closure along Jalan Boon Lay will be effected to allow for falsework installation. This will enable the construction of the portal beam supporting the viaduct as it makes a 90-degree turn to run along Jalan Boon Lay.

JS10 - Tukang
The second station under contract J111 has been moving a little slower compared to its more northerly counterpart at Enterprise. Nonetheless, decent headway has been made with the emergence of the station piers in the road median. The concourse level crossheads were under construction towards the centre of the station's site, with the few piers on the outer edges to the north & south yet to commence crosshead construction.

Immediately south of the station stood a single viaduct pier, located next to the contract boundary with contract J112. Being a movement & expansion joint, it is likely that the pier would be handed over to the neighbouring contract for viaduct segment launching works before being returned to the current contractor - China Harbor Engineering Co (CHEC).

15 December 2024 - A further viaduct pier base can be seen immediately south of the station.

JS11 - Jurong Hill
The first station under contract J112 has seen somewhat slow progress at the station site. Foundation works had wrapped up and the first of several station piers began to show in the road median. Work was also taking place within the road side table for the future exits of the station.

JS12 - Jurong Pier
The final station along Phase 3's southern section has seen the station building structure come up slowly, but surely. At the beginning of the year, all that could be seen at the site were mostly the footings of the station building. By the end of the year, a row of columns stood in the centre of the station, low walls were visible along with other columns around the station perimeter.

Things on the viaduct front were slow moving, however. Sections of land were cleared of vegetation early in the year, but other than some site preparation works such as the demolition of an existing property perimeter fence and access road diversions, nothing much else has taken place. It is likely that such works may ramp up in the coming year as bored piling works begin and viaduct piers begin construction. At this stage, they are not being built in the vicinity as yet.

In a weird juxtaposition, right next to the station site sits a temporary storage yard of sorts. It was recently noted that some viaduct segmental boxes were stacked away at one corner of the yard, likely to be used for the contract's viaduct span construction works. At the moment, these look out of place in the absence of viaduct piers in the vicinity. Nonetheless, these may be used for segment launching works taking place nearer to Jurong Hill station.

Through this section of the line, works are at varied stages of progress. There remains a long way to go till the line feels as though it is becoming more of a reality consistently through the industrial estate areas. We look forward to all that 2025 has to bring and with 4 years to go till this section's opening, we are confident that the intended works can be completed within the specified time frame.
