J105 - Jurong West update Q2 2023

15 June 2023 - Concrete pumping in progress for the casting of the station concourse slab.

To finish off our Q2 2023 updates on the Jurong Region Line (JRL) phase 1, we visit contract J105 for the construction of Jurong West station. We had earlier done an update between Q1 & Q2, hence this update will cover the updates of the remaining months for Q2 2023.

Station
Since our last update in April 2023, works at the station have progressed to include 1 completed concourse level crosshead, 1 crosshead in the midst of casting and a further 1 crosshead at the rebar installation stage. A total of approximately 10 station piers will need to undergo this process, hence the progress to completion of the crosshead piers is approximately 25% as of the end of Q2 2023. Throughout the quarter, work has been largely focused on the casting of the initial 3 crossheads, in addition to the completion of the remaining 2 station piers following the diversion of the road to place the station in the road median.

7 May 2023 - Hanger beams and lifted segmental box girders (SBGs) can be seen on 2 viaduct
piers.

Viaducts
Over the last quarter, work has been confined somewhat to the 4 viaduct piers between Jurong West station and the road junction with Jalan Bahar, Jalan Boon Lay & Jurong West Avenue 4. Ultimately, this stretch will see a total of 8 piers to support the viaduct spans. As of the end of the quarter, a total of 6 piers had been cast up to the crown level, with 5 having their crossheads completed. The remaining pier without a crosshead constructed sits at the road junction and will need its twin column to be constructed before the portal beam can be cast in place of a typical crosshead.

Work at the remaining 2 piers was still focused on the foundation elements. Of the 5 piers that had completed crossheads, 4 had begun the launching sequence for viaduct segmental box girders (SBGs). A total of 8 hanger beams were used to lift the first segments on each side and trackway while a set of 4 lifting frames took over the work following the installation & bonding of the first segments. The lifting frames are capable of lifting the SBGs into position through the use of a winch whereas the hanger beams merely serve to allow the initial SBGs to be hung in position to begin the launching sequence.

Upcoming works over Q3 2023
Over the next quarter, works at the station can be expected to centre around completion of the concourse level crossheads. One should expect a further 3 to 4 crossheads to be under construction or completed by the end of Q3 2023 according to progress seen in Q2. One can also expect that at least 1 viaduct span be completed by the end of Q3 as progress for launching beyond the initial segment has been somewhat slow, despite the quick initial launches seen. Do stay tuned as we bring you further updates on progress along the JRL in time to come.
