J113 - First phase 3 piers in NTU | Nanyang Crescent update Q3 2023

16 September 2023 - A view of one of the approximately 8 piers currently under construction for
phase 3 of the Jurong Region Line.

During our time away from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), work has progressed to the extent that there are now several piers under construction at various stages within contract J113. These represent the first piers of phase 3 of the Jurong Region Line (JRL), which consists of 4 contracts awarded to 3 different sets of contractors. The contractor for all contracts within NTU happen to be the same. As of the time of visit, approximately 8 piers were in progress. The 4 closest to Nanyang Crescent station were at the most advanced stage of construction of the 8, owing to the topography of the area where the pier columns will not be excessively high.

Nanyang Crescent station
The station itself will sit relatively low with the platform level sandwiched by upper and lower concourses. Part of the platform will, in fact, be at approximately street level. With this in mind, work at the station site is still focused on the foundation and site clearing works.

16 September 2023 - Part of the slope near to the NIE building still needs to be cleared for
the station to be built.

16 September 2023 - Further west, near the North Spine bus stop, a few more pier columns
are visible.

Piers
Approximately 2 piers are located east and west of the station site respectively. Due to the topography of the area, the columns here are extremely low, thus requiring less time to construct to entirety. Thus, the columns have already been cast to the crown level and the next stage will be the construction of the crossheads. This is opposed to the viaduct piers nearer to Nanyang Gateway station which are much taller and have a longer column before the crown.

16 September 2023 - Further west is another viaduct pier. It is to the left of the green crane here.
On the very right, just behind the orange road sign, is the second viaduct pier in this work site.

16 September 2023 - Heading eastwards, here are the two viaduct piers along Nanyang Drive.

The presence of viaduct piers within NTU means that a significant milestone has been reached for phase 3 as both southern and northern sections now have piers cast (southern section at contract J111 near Boon Lay). Nonetheless, many more piers will need to be built in the challenging, undulating terrain. We look forward to seeing more of the piers starting to crop up and will keep you updated on the progress as it takes place. Do stay tuned for more updates, especially on the remaining 4 piers which will be coming shortly.
