24 September 2023 - An overview of the station site at the end of Q3 2023. |
Work over at Choa Chu Kang station has been barreling along with major progress made over the past quarter. Station columns have gone up and the viaduct piers parallel to the North-South Line (NSL) and Bukit Panjang LRT tracks have sprung up with crosshead construction beginning as well. Be warned, this post is going to be a long one and photo-heavy.
Station exterior
In this section, we look at the new addition to the station which will house a new platform for the Marina South Pier-bound NSL and the new Jurong Region Line (JRL). Over the course of the past quarter, work has shifted from casting the cable and services troughs underneath the concourse level to the casting of the columns that will support the platforms. This is significant progress as the next stage will be to cast the platform level itself.
The tracks here will be supported in a track bed that is connected to and suspended between the platforms. This is unlike the structure of the existing Choa Chu Kang NSL station where the viaduct structure exists within the station itself and the platforms are supported by the viaduct piers as well.
On the southern end of the existing NSL station, a platform extension is being built. This will house plant rooms at the platform level and shops at the concourse level once done. Significant progress has been made on the extension in the past quarter, with casting works reaching the platform level.

Station interior
Major changes are coming to the interior of the existing NSL station. As part of the station's reconfiguration works, the fareline will be shifted and broken up into 3 separate farelines facing the station's northern, eastern and southern fronts. The passenger service centre will also be shifted away from its current position. In addition, the existing escalators and staircases will make way for new sets that will be placed in a totally different configuration.
Works are underway to divert away existing services like telephone cables, communication cables and electrical wiring. These will help to free up space for the diversion works which will be coming along.
Over the past quarter, the biggest change would be the hoarding up of an atrium at the platform level, found at the northern end of the station. This is likely to be for the construction of a new staircase that will connect to the future mezzanine level to be constructed on the northern end of the station.

This mezzanine level will be expanded to allow access to both NSL and JRL platforms once the station reconfiguration is completed. A similar mezzanine will be built at the northern end of the station as well. To access the NSL & JRL platforms, all passengers must use the mezzanine level. |

Viaduct
Another interesting site is that of the viaducts after turning off from Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3. Over the last quarter, the progress of the piers has come quite a long way. At the beginning of the quarter, there were 2 piers cast to crown level next to the car park around the HDB blocks. By the end of the quarter, a third had joined them and crosshead construction was commencing for one of the earlier completed piers.
Further piers were under construction at the over run area north of the station. As of the end of the quarter, two of the northern piers for the Jurong Pier-bound trackway was completed. The remaining twin pier, just north of the station, for the Choa Chu Kang-bound trackway has yet to be fully constructed.

Overall, significant progress has been made at Choa Chu Kang station through Q3 2023. The coming quarter is likely to see more changes with the station being remodeled and reconfigured to allow for access to the new line. We'll be sure to keep you update as progress is made.
