Quite some time has passed since our last Snapshot update of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) in November last year. Since then, we've had news that phase 1 of the line will only complete 6 months later than intended and the shell station JS2A will be built by the 2030's. Despite the news of the change in timeline for revenue operations, the contractors have been hard at work in between our updates and it is clear that they are pushing hard to complete the line. Things were getting exciting along the first phase of the line. We'll unpack all the updates after the jump.

Viaduct span construction works have been completed for all contracts except at J109 and J112. With this, approximately 85% of the viaduct spans have been completed. Interestingly, both contracts J109 and J112 have several piers remaining to be constructed, although all viaduct pier columns constructed for J109. J112 on the other hand, still has several viaduct piers to be constructed in their entirety as we'll see in this post.

Phase 1
The rails have been fully laid and most of the tracks have undergone final gauging. This is when the track slab is cast in place, with the concrete plinths visible in place of the initial MRT system's guard rails. A similar system was used along the East-West Line (EWL)'s Tuas West Extension, albeit with ballast added in as well.

Works for the passenger service centre (PSC) can be seen underway at several stations along the phase. In addition, we've seen the first Platform Screen Gates (PSGs) commence installation (we are aware that the Land Transport Authority prefers to refer to the platform door system as Half-Height Platform Screen Doors, but this writer prefers the shorter term). The majority of the stations have also commenced exit construction, with all stations that have linkbridges already having these installed except at Gek Poh.

Tengah depot (Contract J101)
In a nutshell: Works are advancing, with cladding being installed on the administration building's exterior. Metalwork was also installed at the depot's main entrance where parking bays will allow visitors to exchange passes before entering the facility. Maintenance locomotives were also seen at the rolling stock workshop, easily visible with their bright yellow livery. The bus depot was also taking shape, while the locomotive and permanent way workshops progressed as well.

JS1 - Choa Chu Kang (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Things were busy at Choa Chu Kang, with new sections of the existing North-South Line (NSL) since reopened. The new escalators at the northern end of the NSL station connecting the transfer mezzanine and the platform were since opened for passenger use, in addition to the second lift. Works at the JRL station were also advancing along, with works trains accessing the station to allow cabling laying works to take place. The 12-metre high noise barriers around the site perimeter still remain in place though.

JS2 - Choa Chu Kang West (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: The station was structurally completed with works on the interior ongoing for the installation of the utilities boom at platform level. Other fittings here could be seen as well, such as the railings around the atriums where escalators & stairs are installed and the emergency stop plungers. Works were ongoing at the concourse level to install the glass windows along the station's facade. Construction of the PSC was also in progress at the station's eastern end, as block works were underway to create the permanent wall above the windows. Cladding works had commenced at one of the exits outside block 291. Along the viaducts, noise barriers were almost completely installed through the section of viaduct that traversed along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3.

JS2A - 'Forest Hill' (Contract J102, provisional future station)
In a nutshell: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the station officially this year during the Committee of Supply debates, with an estimated completion date in the 2030's. This means that works for the station will not commence so soon and the trains on the line will pass through the shell structure for the first few years before works commence. Visually, there are not many changes to the shell structure which consists of two parallel trackbeds that would allow for a future island platform to be constructed between the bounds. Noise barriers have since been installed over the section of tracks where crossover points are located. You can also read up more about JS2A station in our post here.

JS3 - Tengah (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Among the stations under this contract, this station appears to have the least number of changes between updates. Rain screens were since installed, along with additional signaling equipment. The viaducts carry more noise barriers, especially along the lower level viaducts which will be operated in phase 1. However, apart from these changes, little else appears visually different.

JS4 - Hong Kah (Contract J103)
In a nutshell: This station has exciting updates to showcase. The first being the first installation of the PSGs across the JRL. Platform gates have been installed along both platforms. Based on our counts, it appears that 9 sets of doors are present along the bound of each platform. Elsewhere, signaling equipment could be seen along the tracks and noise barrier installation continued along the viaducts. From previous photos, we also know that the PSC was at a more advanced stage compared to that seen at other stations.

JS5 - Corporation (Contract J103)
In a nutshell: Externally, there was not a whole lot that appeared different at the station. Most of the progress had since been made on the station's interior, with ceiling panels and interior cladding being installed. Along the viaduct, works were underway for the installation of the noise barriers atop the parapet walls.

JS6 - Jurong West (Contract J105)
In a nutshell: This station is likely to be the most advanced for exterior facade finishings. Along the northern edge of the station at concourse level, most of the glass facade has been completed. Cladding over the central section of the station has also since been completed, leaving the end sections where works are still required. Along the southern edge, installation works are still underway for the glass windows. All three exits have since been connected to the station building via linkbridges. The exit closest to block 181B appears to have undergone a scope reduction, with only stair and lift access provided. Escalators are not installed at this exit, these will only be present at the two exits on the station's eastern end. The 12-metre high temporary noise barriers were progressively being removed as construction works advanced.

JS7 - Bahar Junction (Contract J105)
In a nutshell: Everyone's favourite T-junction station has progressed rapidly, with exterior cladding visible along the main station building's southern flank. The two exits that connect to this section of the station have since been connected via linkbridges. The PSC was also under construction, located at the eastern end of the station.

Meanwhile, at the satellite building, works were underway to connect the four exits to this section of the station. Casting works were underway for the planters along the concourse's edge at the western side of the station building. At viaduct level, noise barriers were still being installed.

In a nutshell: Cladding works were underway at the station, with the panels being installed at the concourse level. The panels formed a long continuous stretch along the station's northern side, along the western flank, ending next to the existing East-West Line (EWL) viaducts. Other facade components could be seen undergoing installation works, including brackets for glass panel installation and louvre panels.

JW1 - Gek Poh (Contract J107)
In a nutshell: This is the only phase 1 station remaining where the linkbridges connecting to the exits have yet to be constructed. Recent times have seen the total closure of a stretch of Jurong West Street 75 that was formerly converted into a bus-only roadway. The total closure allows for foundation works for the two station exits to be constructed. Exterior facade works were underway as well, along with the construction of the station PSC at the southern end. Road reinstatement works were in progress at the southern end of the contract boundary, near the portal piers, where the northbound carriageway of Jurong West Street 75 would be diverted back.

Phase 2
Rail laying works have commenced along phase 2 of the line, but are likely to be held up as contract J109's viaduct spans have yet to be completed. This means that trackworks may be unable to proceed through to Jurong East station until the section near Toh Guan is substantially completed and handed over to the trackworks contractor. At present, the trackworks end after Bukit Batok West station, with rails having been almost fully laid through contract J108's sites.

The challenging worksite at Toh Guan is becoming a little bit of a bottleneck for the line's progress, with additional time required for the works to be completed. This station remains the only station that has yet to commence roofing works along phase 2. Under contracts J108 and J110, exterior facade works had since commenced for the stations. Comparatively, stations under contract J109 were at various stages of progress.

JE1 - Tengah Plantation (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: The first station along phase 2 of the line has progressed well, with both station exits roofed over with the initial insultation layer. A final permanent layer of roofing is being added progressively. Within the station, interior fit out works are progressing, including the installation of the utility boom at platform level and PSC works at the southern end of the station concourse, near the Plantation Plaza exit. Installation of the glass panels at concourse level continued, although there was no exterior cladding installation as yet.

JE2 - Tengah Park (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: Exterior facade works had commenced at the second station on this leg of the line, with external cladding panels being installed at the southern end of the station. A livery of red and purple could be seen of the station facade at the southern end, with geometric triangles forming a design. At the northern end of the station, the exit connected by linkbridge across Bukit Batok Road appears to have a streak of colour added to the roof trim recently, indicating a possible purple livery for the station. It is also at this end that the PSC is being constructed in the station's interior.

JE3 - Bukit Batok West (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: The final station under contract J108 has shown similar progress as the other two stations in the contract. Station works are progressing on the external facade, with the installation of brackets for cladding panels to be added. Work on the interior was focused on PSC construction at the station's eastern end and on the utility boom installation at platform level. Rails had been laid through the station, up to the contract boundary with neighbouring contract J109.

JE4 - Toh Guan (Contract J109)
In a nutshell: As one of the team members put it - this station is nightmare fodder. Squeezed in between existing residential blocks on one side and the existing NSL viaducts on the other, works must be sequenced correctly as the station progresses higher and higher. The limited work space has required additional night time road closures to allow the contractor more time to catch up on essential works so that the pace remains as close to schedule as possible. Currently, structural works are in progress at the platform level.

There also still remain gaps in the viaduct spans, notably over the junctions between Jurong East Central with Jurong East Avenue 1 & Toh Guan Road and with Jurong East Street 21. It may take some time yet for these gaps to be fully filled in with viaduct segments. A little further north, in the vicinity of the Pan Island Expressway crossing, parapet wall installation was underway. One viaduct segment near the portal pier over Jurong East Central also still remained to be launched.

To the south of the station, works were also underway for the special span crossing that would see the JRL crossing over the existing EWL viaducts - likely to be the highest point of the JRL. Segments were being launched from two of the three viaduct piers with mobile erectors and lifting frames being deployed.

Tracks through Jurong East Integrated Transport Hub (Contract J120)
In a nutshell: Works on the viaduct cutting through the integrated transport hub appear to be mostly completed. However, there isn't much that can progress until the viaducts connection to the sections being built under contract J109 are completed to allow track works to commence. The overhead bridge connection between the east and west podiums of the development had successfully been launched across the rail viaducts while glass installation on the office tower was nearly completing.

JE5 - Jurong East (Contract J110)
In a nutshell: Cladding works along the station's roof had begun, with the roof truss fully installed. Works on installation of the insulation layers were also done. Within the station, extensive addition & alteration works were underway to reconfigure the layout and shift away existing utilities to open up access for new connections at both platform and concourse level. At Platforms A/B, new closets had been built to house control panels underneath one of the existing escalators while works continued at the other end to demolish a section of the platform floor to allow for the installation of additional escalators.

Work on the new extension at the northern/western end of the station was progressing, with the steel frame reaching the level of the existing tracks. There is still some way to go before launching of the elevated transfer corridor can commence.

JE7 - Pandan Reservoir (Contract J109)
In a nutshell: Progress on the roof truss at the station's southern end has made progress, with approximately 60% of the entire truss now installed. Viaduct span construction works continued on either side of the station. At the northern end, the launch gantry had since successfully crossed over the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), launching viaduct segments across the expressway. To the station's south, launching of viaduct segments was under way using the trestle method for the complex viaduct deck being built. There appear to be at least two track stubs built into the series of portal piers as the line turns eastwards to run along West Coast Road. Viaduct segment launching along West Coast Road continued with the use of the second launching gantry, with parts of the completed viaduct spans having parapet walls being installed.

Phase 3 (South)
The southern section of phase 3 was a mixed bag of progress, with stations under contract J111 advancing along to roof construction while those under contract J112 were still in the structural works phase. Viaduct construction under contract J111 had been completed as well, with significant sections of viaduct spans and viaduct piers remaining to be constructed under contract J112.

JS9 - Enterprise (Contract J111)
In a nutshell: Roof installation works were nearly completed at the station, with the final layer of insulation being added. Exit construction was purportedly underway at the station's eastern side. On the western side, these works were not observed as yet. It is likely that the northbound carriageway of Jalan Boon Lay would need to be diverted first, before exits on this side could commence construction. Closer towards Boon Lay station, the first rails had already been laid as far as the cripple siding above the Jurong Canal & Jurong Central Park. The temporary staging area for track works under this section of the phase next to the Safra Jurong clubhouse was still being set up.

JS10 - Tukang (Contract J111)
In a nutshell: Roofing insulation was being installed at the station, with at least the first layer fully installed. Exit construction works were also commencing along the station's eastern side. Similar to Enterprise station, it is likely that a road diversion would be needed to allow work on the exit at the western side to commence. Parapet installation works were completed to the south of the station, with the works continuing along the viaduct to the north of the station.

JS11 - Jurong Hill (Contract J112)
In a nutshell: Construction of all 10 station piers had since been completed, including the installation of the concourse level crossheads. Installation of the precast beams to form the concourse slab was underway. At certain portions of the station, additional rebar had been added over the beams and the concourse deck cast above. Towards the northern end, works had begun approaching the platform level. Concurrently, construction works for the exits along the eastern end of the station were underway. In addition, the viaduct span sections north of the station were the only sections of viaduct that had been constructed under the contract.

JS12 - Jurong Pier (Contract J112)
In a nutshell: Construction of the station's structure had reached the platform level roughly around the centre of the building. Further construction towards the northern end appeared to be hampered by ongoing works for the underpass and potential connection points for transfer to the future Cross Island Line (CRL), which is expected to have a station here as well. The lift shafts at this station may potentially use concrete as opposed to the metal frames seen at other JRL stations.

The first viaduct pier between the station and neighbouring Jurong Hill station had also recently made an appearance, with the column being cast. Foundation works were still underway for the remaining viaduct piers, the last to be constructed under the JRL project. South of the station, these works had yet to commence for the over run viaduct.

Works under the northern section of phase 3 were well on their way towards commencement of track laying works. All three stations had roofing works in progress or completed, with exit construction under way.

JW3 - Nanyang Gateway (Contract J113)
In a nutshell: The exit structures for the station were taking shape, with escalator pits clearly visible. Lift shafts could also be made out. The exit next to the Nanyang Grove/Nanyang Hills Residences had the roof frames beginning installation as well. Within the station, it appears that escalators had yet to be installed though.
