What is JS2A? Where is JS2A? What is the current status of the station? These are some questions you may have arising out of the Committee of Supply 2026 announcements from the Ministry of Transport today. During the Parliament session, Acting Minister for Transport, Mr. Jeffrey Siow, announced that a new station will be added to the Jurong Region Line (JRL) - JS2A. The station's history is much more complicated though.
What is JS2A?

Some early documents for master-planning of Tengah New Town showed indicative locations of the various stations within the town. These were labelled as stations J3, J4, J5, JE1 and JE2. We now know J4 to be Tengah (JS3), J5 to be Hong Kah (JS4) and JE1 & JE2 to be Tengah Plantation & Park respectively. J3 however, was a station that was not announced together with the rest of the stations forming the JRL back in 2018.

Nonetheless, signs of the station's existence were always present. In HDB's scale model of Tengah town in 2016, the rough alignment of the JRL was shown. Placeholders showing the line's abbreviation were located strategically where future stations would be located. One of these was located in the Forest Hill district, near where the two options indicated in the town's masterplan were sited.

Some discrepancies were subsequently noted in drawings of the locations of stations within contract J102, which was for the construction of the JRL viaducts and stations between Choa Chu Kang and Tengah. These pertained to the location of Tengah station, erroneously located at the site of JS2A station in one drawing. Thus, to answer the major question - JS2A is a future station that was planned with the rest of the JRL but unannounced until this year.
Where is JS2A?

From the above maps, images and diagrams, you should be able to tell that JS2A station will be located within Tengah New Town. This station would serve the northern quadrant of the town. Judging from the timeline for the opening of the station, in the mid-2030's, we can guess that this part of Tengah New Town will be developed in the coming years to coincide with the opening of the station in roughly the same timeframe.
What is the current status of JS2A station?

Our latest images of the station are from end-2025. The station was being constructed as a shell structure, with the future platforms, roof and other fittings to be constructed closer to the station's operationalisation. This is similar to the process that Hume station underwent to become a fully functional station along the Downtown Line (DTL). The shell structure exists as two troughs, in which the tracks are laid for trains to traverse between Choa Chu Kang and Tengah. There is little else to indicate the presence of a future station here, apart from the tracks having diverged, using a slimmer pier support design and parapets with different designs to the regular JRL viaducts.

What's next for JS2A station?
With today's announcement, the JRL is anticipated to begin service in mid-2028 with JS2A coming online in the mid-2030's. This would mean that a separate contract (perhaps J102A?) may need to be called to finish off the construction of the station's remaining components. This will include the superstructure components, which form the station building. Another avenue for this may be to exercise options that may have been built into the existing contract.
Fittings, such as escalators, lifts, ticket machines and lighting will need to be installed once the superstructure has been completed. Modifications to the line's signaling and communications systems will need to be carried out to allow trains to register a new station and stopping positions at the platforms.
Drawing comparisons to Hume station, the process of converting the shell structure into a functional station took approximately 4 years to complete. Contract 915A was awarded on 14 January 2021, with the station opening to the public on 28 February 2025. It can be anticipated that it will be some time before any new contracts will be called for the full fit out of JS2A station. Additionally, the provision of escalators and other components may be bundled together with the contracts for other projects completing around the same time, such as Brickland station on the North-South Line (NSL) to obtain better pricing for economies of scale.
TL;DR version
1. JS2A is a station planned on the JRL that was not announced together with the other 24 stations in May 2018, when the line was officially unveiled.
2. JS2A is located in the northern quadrant of Tengah New Town, and between Choa Chu Kang West (JS2) and Tengah (JS3) stations.
3. JS2A is currently built as a shell structure, with 2 track bed viaducts supporting tracks carrying trains between Choa Chu Kang & Tengah.
4. A future contract may be called to complete structural and building works for the JS2A station before it becomes operational.
