25 June 2023 - Station columns being cast at ground level. |
Contract J110 is for the construction of a new 4-storey annex to the existing Jurong East interchange station that will serve the new Jurong Region Line (JRL). Initially the original concept for the station's addition & alteration was to introduce an entirely new roof with suspended transfer link over the existing station. However an alternative option that was subsequently adopted will instead see the retention of the iconic spaceframe roof of the existing station with the transfer connections shifted to the western end of the station, taking over the former entrance plaza area. Over the past quarter, one has been able to see the station slowly begin to creep upwards with station columns being cast.

The above 3 images given a summary of the changes at the contract site over the past quarter, Although outwardly it may not appear to have changed much, construction is a long process and the changes are subtle with drastic changes taking place at the beginning and end of the process. Sadly this view is no longer available as the images were taken from JCube shopping mall which shuttered on 6 August 2023.

The majority of the visible works are at the western area. Here, casting work has commenced on the station columns that will support the concourse level. In all, there will be 3 rows of columns required for the new station and thus far, 2 rows can be seen being constructed. The third row, closest to the existing station structure, has yet to begin work at this juncture. With columns being cast at the western end, works are slowly moving eastwards.

16 April 2023 - Escalators, stairs and shops once used to exist here. |
Recently an additional temporary elevator has come into service to complement the existing elevator connecting to the station's concourse level. This provides an additional barrier-free route that is nearer to the the JCube shopping mall and will help those with mobility issues reduce the distance to be covered to access an elevator. Work is ongoing to reconfigure the station area with most works taking place at the ground level in Q2 2023.
In Q3, some works can be expected to commence at the platform and concourse levels. The works will involve the relocation of several plant rooms to make way for more escalators to be installed between the platforms and concourse to facilitate transfers between lines. To enable these escalators to be installed, some equipment rooms will need to be relocated and new ones constructed to house the equipment. In addition, column casting works for the station structure will also continue on its eastward push.
Do stay tuned for more updates on these & more in time to come.
