The two stations being constructed under contract J103 in end-Q1 2025. |
Contract J103 is a critical contract in the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL), owing that this contract is responsible for the construction of the reception tracks that connect the depot to the mainline. Without this critical connection, trains from the depot will not be able to access the main line for testing or for revenue service. Works through the past quarter have seen some milestones being achieved - namely the semi-completion of the main line viaduct span across the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), the commencement of escalator installation at both stations under the contract as well as interior fit out works taking place. We'll go through these developments in greater detail after the jump.
JS4 - Hong Kah
Major highlights of progress in Q1 at the station include the installation of escalators connecting the concourse & platform levels and the completion of the linkbridge connecting to the exit across Tengah Garden Avenue from the station building.

Escalator installation
Installation of the 3 escalators connecting the concourse and platform levels of the station have begun this past quarter. Early on, in the beginning of the quarter no escalators were seen to be installed. However, by the close of the quarter, it was possible to make out at least 2 sets installed at the northern end of the station, flanking the centrally located staircase. The escalators here were covered in grey tarpaulin, instead of the yellow seen under contract J102's station sites.

Linkbridge construction
Another mark of the progress made has been the completion of the linkbridge connecting the station with an exit located across Tengah Garden Avenue. Through the quarter, casting works were conducted and completed, with roofing works commencing.

Viaducts between Hong Kah & Corporation stations and Tengah depot
Much work still remains along this critical section of viaduct that links the depot with the main line and connects the Choa Chu Kang/Tengah side of the line to the side serving Jurong. Over the past quarter, the most significant development can be seen along the western reception tracks where the viaduct piers have finally taken shape to allow segment launching works to begin.

Over at the main line viaduct, part of the crossing over the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) has been semi-completed, with one segment remaining to be launched to complete the span over the westbound carriageway. The span across the eastbound carriageway was half completed, with the remaining half connecting to a movement & expansion joint pier, requiring more complicated launching methods.

Finally, the eastern reception tracks have completed all spans across the PIE. However, the viaduct spans along Jurong West Avenue 2 still requires plenty of work as gaps still remain in this section leading up to the connection with the main line spans to the east of Corporation station.

JS5 - Corporation
Progress at Corporation station over the past quarter has seen the works at the two station exit podiums continue while escalator installation works have commenced. Cladding works on the station's roof have also commenced along with the installation of cladding on the station platforms' utility services booms, from which services such as passenger information displays, public address speakers and lighting will be hung. Viaduct beam construction towards the contract boundary was largely completed, with works focused on the launching on viaduct segmental box girders near movement & expansion joint piers.

Construction of exit podium
Two exit podiums will be built as part of the station's initial construction, serving 3 exits. A fourth exit was initially planned but has been deferred for the time being. Work on the exit podium on the southern side of the station is fairly advanced, with the structure receiving its roof frame. The structure for the stairs, lift and escalators have all been cast. The next expected step will be to have the escalators installed.
Over on the station's northern side, a second podium that would eventually connect to the mobility corridor within the Jurong Innovation District was also being constructed. This podium would serve 2 exits on either side and feature lift, stair and escalator access. While the linkbridge over Jurong West Avenue 2 had been constructed prior, the works for the podium could only begin in earnest following the realignment of the westbound carriageway to the south side of the station, allowing the eastbound carriageway to revert to its original position as well. Work on the exit podium was progressing, with the concourse level slab of the podium taking shape through the past quarter.

Station interior fit out
Various works have been ongoing within the station's interior, including but not limited to electrical component installation, trial assembly of the station's side wall panels, utility services boom installation and escalator installation works. Part of the utility services boom was also noted to have begun cladding works, following the installation of cable ducting and public address system speakers within.

Viaduct beam assembly progress
The boundary line for contract J103's scope of works extends along the viaduct towards Jurong West station, ending just before the junction of Jurong West Avenue 2 with Jurong West Street 23. Works along the viaduct have steadily progressed with approximately 2 to 3 sections near movement & expansion joint piers remaining to be completed. These employ the use of the trestle method for segment launching, hence require more time as the trestle structure needs to be assembled and checked for stability before launching works can proceed.

While there has definitely been progress made through the past quarter, significant gaps still remain in the line's viaduct within this contract. Most notably, although the western reception tracks have successfully completed spans across the PIE, the interface point between the viaducts for these tracks and the main line tracks has not been completed yet. Without an interface point, trackworks will not be able to proceed and trains will not be able to access the main line for systems testing works.
The good news is that there is still time for these works to be completed as the trains have yet to arrive, although they are expected to reach local shores some time this year. It is also heartening to see the progress made on the station buildings at both locations, with the exit podium structures coming up quickly. We wish contract J103 a safe & timely completion of the remaining works.
