J109 - Toh Guan, Jurong Town Hall & Pandan Reservoir update Q2 2024

Contract J109's three stations as of end-Q2.

Contract J109's three stations - Toh Guan, Jurong Town Hall & Pandan Reservoir - saw slight progress. The station site with the most progress over the quarter was Toh Guan, which saw the station's concourse level crossheads constructed. Works at Jurong Town Hall and Pandan Reservoir station were unfortunately a little slower through the quarter, with not as much visible progress seen. We take a look at the progress made through the quarter after the jump.

JE4 - Toh Guan
Q2 has seen the concourse level crossheads of the Toh Guan station slowly take shape. An update session was held for residents in Q1 to update them of the then upcoming works which would see the closure of Jurong East Central to allow for the installation of the formwork required for the casting of the crossheads. Since then, two crossheads were successfully cast over Q2, with the formwork for the first being removed by the end of the quarter.

A large part of the northern section of the contract also involves the construction of sections of viaduct on either end of Toh Guan station. This includes a section that will span across the Pan Island Expressway (PIE). Over the quarter, viaduct segment launching works were carried out on the northern side of the expressway in Bukit Batok South. A pair of lifting frames were used to launch the single box double celled segments into position near the contract boundary with neighbouring contract J108. This section in particular was expedited to enable segments to be launched onto the movement & expansion joint pier built under J108.

By the end of the quarter, launching works for the pier adjacent to the movement & expansion joint pier had been completed, allowing works to move onto the next phase. This would likely involve the setup of a trestle system upon which the remaining viaduct segments could be launched.

1 May 2024 - The movement & expansion joint pier was constructed by contract J108 but handed
over to contract J109 for viaduct segment launching works.

station.

2 June 2024 - Supporting framework in place to allow for the casting of the crosshead as
viaduct construction inches closer to the PIE.

2 June 2024 - A movement & expansion joint pier next to the PIE. The end of the special span
crossing will sit atop this pier.

Viaducts to the south of Toh Guan station will see the line rising to clear over the existing East-West Line (EWL) tracks. Viaduct piers along this stretch were still focused on foundational works and not as advanced in construction compared to the northern counterparts.

1 May 2024 - Viaduct pier construction taking place south of the Toh Guan station, along Jurong
East Central.

it interfaces with neighbouring contract J120.

1 May 2024 - The pile cap of the pier that will carry the JRL over the existing EWL tracks can
be seen completed with rebar for the pier column sticking out. Further segments of rebar will
be joined to form the viaduct pier column.

JE6 - Jurong Town Hall
For most part, it has been more of the same at Jurong Town Hall station over Q2. Works at the station have been slowly progressing with the construction of the concourse level beginning from the centre of the station and slowly moving out towards either end. Progress here has not seen dramatic changes as compared to some of the other stations along the line.

Work on the viaduct piers between Jurong East station and the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) crossing have seen mixed progress. Viaduct piers north of the Jurong Town Hall station appear to be making more pronounced progress compared to the viaduct piers located south of the station, with several piers beginning to cast their respective crossheads. In comparison, the viaduct piers south of the Jurong Town Hall station were mostly half-built pier columns.

interchange & JTC Summit building in mid-Q2.

23 May 2024 - Work had also commenced in the median of Jurong Gateway Road for a pier

JE7 - Pandan Reservoir
Similar to progress at Jurong Town Hall station to the north, progress at Pandan Reservoir station has been lackluster. Works are slowly progressing further south with the station building barely beginning work on the mezzanine level for the sections with completed station columns.

The little progress made can be seen through the number of station columns that were progressively cast through the quarter. With the columns cast, the noise barrier along Jurong Town Hall Road was also taken down to allow for more room for construction machinery to maneuver.

in place.

1 May 2024 - The station columns were mostly rebar at this stage.

16 June 2024 - A view southwards along Jurong Town Hall Road. The noise barriers were now gone.

16 June 2024 - The station columns were now slightly taller as of end-Q2.

with Pandan Gardens & Teban Gardens Road.

In keeping up with construction on the Jurong Town Hall station side of the AYE, viaduct piers between the expressway and Pandan Reservoir station also feature pier columns only. No crossheads were constructed atop the columns yet. Judging by the height clearance necessary to cross the expressway, it is also likely that these piers are not at full height yet. The vertical clearance requirements are also the reason for the mezzanine level at Pandan Reservoir station as the line's vertical profile can only slope up or downwards at a maximum gradient of 3% to allow safe operation of trains on the track in future.

The last section of the contract sees viaduct piers continue south of the Pandan Reservoir station up to Sungei Ulu Pandan. This stretch likewise has viaduct pier columns constructed along West Coast Road with no crossheads yet. Apart from the number of completed columns growing, there was no other visible progress made along this section to report on through Q2.
