May has been a busy month for the various contracts of the Jurong Region Line (JRL). Each of the contracts has seen progress made with things beginning to pick up speed over at phase 1 of the line. Some changes are more visible than others and we're here to provide you with an extensive low-down of all the progress made. Loads of images after the jump for this month's update.

Phase 1
The first section of the line is approximately 3 years away from completion. Contracts under this phase of the line are quickly completing viaduct spans, pushing stations up to the platform levels and beginning with the installation of the parapet walls along the viaducts. A lot of work still remains before the track laying and cable works can begin.

Tengah depot (Contract J101)
In a nutshell: The depot is fighting against the clock with the civil works still underway for the workshops and stabling yard. These key sections are essential for the delivery of the first J151 train sets. According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), these trains were expected to arrive in the middle of the year. However judging by how complete the depot is, it appears that this may not be likely. We're betting that 2025 might be a better bet. Trackwork has been ongoing just outside the workshops and has recently begun outside the stabling yards. No rails here yet, but sleepers and ballast can be seen there.

JS1 - Choa Chu Kang (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Work at the station has seen the installation of hoarding alongside the existing North-South Line viaduct as construction of the new platform begins. The trackbeds for the JRL station are now well established with the JRL platform taking shape. Work is still underway on several viaduct piers near the station even as viaduct span construction south of the station continues. Within the existing NSL station concourse, the old flooring is being replaced with new tiles (thank goodness we got rid of the horrendous lime tiles) ahead of the major revamp of the fare-paid areas.

JS2 - Choa Chu Kang West (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Viaduct span construction has recently kicked off along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3, along which the station is located. Works at the station have seen the completion of the concourse level columns, with casting for the plant and back-of-house rooms taking place. Beams to support the platform level were also being cast.

JS2A - Forest Hill (Contract J102, provisional future station)
In a nutshell: The major change near the future station would be the completion of segment launching works on the Tengah-side of the special span across Brickland Road. Segment launching works have recently commenced on the Choa Chu Kang-side and will shortly bridge the gap over the road junction.

JS3 - Tengah (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Progress at the elusive station seems to centre around both launch gantries closing in on either side. Gantry Mulan works the lower level while gantry Gaia works the upper level. The viaduct spans leading to the station near the Tengah junction where the east and west routes diverge has also seen parapet installation works commence. This is likely a pre-cursor to trackwork installation commencing shortly as the parapet walls also include brackets for cabling.

JS4 - Hong Kah (Contract J103)
In a nutshell: At long last Hong Kah station is progressing further upwards. Work has recently commenced on casting of the platform level beams atop the concourse level columns. These will aid in providing the horizontal support underneath the platform and trackbeds. Viaduct pier construction west of the station has also made progress although there is still a significant amount of empty space to be filled with viaduct piers.

JS5 - Corporation (Contract J103)
In a nutshell: Arguably one of the most advanced stations in terms of overall completeness, roof truss installation continued at Corporation. Each side of the station will see the installation of 7 V-shaped columns that work to support the roof above. To date, 5 of the pairs have been installed, leaving 2 further pairs to completion. Casting work for the plant rooms on the western end of the platform have begun with the installation of rebar.

JS6 - Jurong West (Contract J105)
In a nutshell: Jurong West station has seen the beginning of its trackbeds forming, with rebar work taking place ahead of the parapet wall casting. The design of the station here calls for a slightly different design, where the trackbeds are supported by two beams beneath as opposed to being fully trough-like. Give the station a few more weeks and we'll be able to see the trackbed sections in their full glory. Viaduct span construction has also seen the installation of segments on the second truss completed. Further adjustments of the individual segments will be done before they are tensioned and bonded together.

JS7 - Bahar Junction (Contract J105)
In a nutshell: Launching works at Bahar Junction's satellite station building have continued, with the station's concourse beam segments now suspended in mid-air for a fair distance. This is, undoubtedly, one of the most unique methods of constructing a station locally. Never before has a station required segment launching for its concourse level. Progress continues to be made with the various portal piers taking shape and viaduct spans gradually growing longer. Work at the main station building has also reached the platform level.

JS8 - Boon Lay (Contract J106)
In a nutshell: Work at Boon Lay station begins on the tricky part - constructing over the existing East-West Line (EWL) viaduct. This will see both sides of the station come together one level above the EWL. Connecting these two halves of the station will not be an easy task, owing to the limited window in which work can take place to prevent disruption to the existing rail service. Further north of the station, work has begun on the painstaking process of launching viaduct segments that will see spans completed atop the movement expansion joint piers. Near the contract boundary with J105, parapet wall installation work has also recently begun.

Phase 2
The next section of the line is still several years away. However, the contractors on this section of the line are not slacking off either with decent progress being made at several sites along the phase.

JE1 - Tengah Plantation (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: Construction of the platform level and trackbeds is in full swing. Unlike several stations in phase 1, the platform level is mostly made out of beams for now with the slab flooring not yet cast. The rough shape of the station's platform can be seen nonetheless. Viaduct span construction continues along Plantation Crescent.

JE2 - Tengah Park (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: The station building is in somewhat of a mixed progress with half of the station commencing on platform beam  casting. The remaining half has yet to begin casting of these structures. Viaduct span construction is almost complete for the sections on either side of the station with parapet wall construction beginning to the station's south. To the north, a traction substation is likely to be built next to the Tengah electrical sub station facility.

JE4 - Toh Guan (Contract J109)
In a nutshell: Work at the station has seen the installation of formwork for the concourse slab's crossheads. Station piers are progressively appearing as well with the columns being cast before crosshead construction can proceed. Viaduct segment launching has seen the lifting frames shifted onto another pier to begin the process so that the viaduct section that abuts the movement expansion joint pier built by contract J108 can be completed and the pier handed back to the neighbouring contractor.

Phase 3 (South)
Some of the viaduct piers along the southern stretch of phase 3 appear to be more complete than some of those along phase 2 of the line. Nonetheless, there are still wide stretches devoid of any piers - be it viaduct or station.

JS9 - Enterprise (Contract J111)
In a nutshell: Viaduct piers on either side of the station have taken place although the piers for the station itself have not come up as quickly. Crosshead casting has been completed for some of the viaduct piers near Jurong Central Park, with segment launching underway.

Phase 3 (North)
The final section of phase 3 to the north shows great progress. Viaduct segment launching works have been underway for some time with significant sections completed. The stations though, are taking a bit longer to come about.

JW3 - Nanyang Gateway (Contract J113)
In a nutshell: Great headway has been made with the launching of viaduct segments outside Hall 8. Several more viaduct piers have also begun popping up along Nanyang Avenue. At the station site, the first of the station's pier columns are beginning to make an appearance.
