J105 - An update in Q1 2025

The two station sites under contract J105 towards the end of Q1 2025.

Through Q1 2025, works under contract J105 have plodded along at the Jurong West and Bahar Junction station sites. Key milestones under the Jurong Region Line (JRL) contract include the commencement of exit podium works at both stations, the commencement of escalator installation works at Bahar Junction station and continued progress on viaduct span construction. We'll take a closer look at the achievements made after the jump.

The Jurong Region Line (JRL) 2024 progress report continues with an update on contract J105, responsible for the construction of Jurong West & Bahar Junction stations. This is the fourth update in the series to close off an update on the progress made along the JRL over the 12 months of the year. Here are the first three posts in the series:

Several milestones were achieved through the year under the contract. These include the completion of significant stretches of viaduct spans along Jurong West Avenue 2, completion of the two concourse level spans for the Bahar Junction satellite station building and the commencement of roofing works at both stations. Parapet wall works had also begun between the two stations. As of end 2024, work was going on to complete the remaining sections of viaducts where gaps were still present. We'll take a look at all of China Railway No 11 Bureau's accomplishments for 2024 after the jump.

J105 - Jurong West & Bahar Junction update Q2 2024

A view of the Jurong West (top) and Bahar Junction (bottom) stations under contract J105 as
of end-Q2.

Along phase 1, contract J105 is without a doubt one of the most interesting contracts to observe, given that it encompasses the construction of the unique Bahar Junction station. Also included under the contract is the more tame and templated Jurong West station. Over the past quarter, gains have been made in both stations' construction. The viaducts along the stretch were also coming together as well, with sections of completed spans progressing to the next stage of construction.

J105 - Jurong West & Bahar Junction update Q1 2024

18 March 2024 - A view of the progress of work at Jurong West station at end-Q1 2024.

21 March 2024 - Progress of work at Bahar Junction station as of end-Q1 2024.

Work over at contract J105 has seen the roads "dance" as Senior Minister of State for Transport, Amy Khor, described them once during an engagement session for the North-South Expressway. At both station sites, work has seen the diversions of roadways as construction progressed. We'll take a deeper look into the progress made over the first quarter of the year.

J105 - Bahar Junction update Q3 2023

10 September 2023 - An aerial view of the station site at end-Q3 2023.

If any station or site were to give Tengah a run for its money, hands down it would be Bahar Junction. Three platforms - check. Straddling three different roadways - check. Building the station above a junction as well? Check. Amazingly, progress is starting to make up some ground over the past quarter as the construction of the station shifts gears from foundation and pier-work to casting of the supporting crossheads and concourse slab. Mid-way through the past quarter, road diversions were also put in place which constrained the road capacity at the key junction where Jurong West Avenue 4 meets Streets 64 and 75 - all major thoroughfares.

J105 - Bahar Junction update Q2 2023

29 June 2023

Rounding up our update for Phase 1 of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) at Q2 is Bahar Junction station, also under contract J105. Similar with Jurong West station, we had done an update in the early part of the quarter hence this update covers the remaining parts of the quarter of May & June 2023.

J105 - Bahar Junction update Q1/Q2 2023

8 April 2023 - A view of the heart of Bahar Junction station at the junction of Jurong West
Avenues 2 & 4 and Streets 64 & 75.

Today we cover the progress made at Bahar Junction station site over Q1 & the early part of Q2 of 2023. There are some noticeable differences since our last visit here at the end of 2022 with more station piers coming up along Jurong West Avenue 2. With the unique design of the station serving trackways heading in three different bounds, the site also stretches to Jurong West Streets 64 and 75, the former having less visible progress than the latter.

J105 - Bahar Junction year-end update

17 November 2022 - An aerial view of the station at the junction of
Jurong West Avenues 2 and 4 & Jurong West Streets 64 and 75.

Bahar Junction is a complicated station through and through. No aspect of it is easy - be it at either the construction or revenue operations stages being one of the first T-junction stations on a single service. The site is labyrinth of road diversions, lane re-markings and construction. Most of the works are focused on utility diversion and station foundation works. Up to recently, there were no signs of any station supporting piers.

Recently we came across some new renders of the stations along the Jurong Region Line (JRL). We thought it would be fitting to do a re-post of all the renders we've amassed thus far. Do stay tuned as we'll let you know where we got the new renders from after the phase 3 batch.

JRL1 Construction update - Q3 2021

8 September 2021 - A view of the Choa Chu Kang interchange site as seen from an MRT train.

It has been a few months since our last update and unfortunately, there has not been too much progress on the line's construction. Majority of the works are still focused on the preliminary stages of utility diversion and site preparation. At some sites, there has not been much visible progress while others show a bit more visible work. In this update we'll do our best to give an overall summary of the progress.

Pre-construction - Bahar Junction

One of the most complex stations on the line, Bahar Junction will sit on the junction of Jurong West Avenue 2, Avenue 4 and Streets 64 and 75. One portion of the station will sit in an east-westerly direction while another portion will sit in a north-southerly direction.

Contract tendering update - J101, J102, J103, J105, J110

Following the official announcement of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) in May 2018, the tendering process for the civil contracts began around November last year. To date several large civil works contracts have been floated for tender.

Contract list as of 18 February 2019.
These include the civil works contracts for the construction of Tengah depot (contract J101), Choa Chu Kang interchange, Choa Chu Kang West and Tengah stations (contract J102), Hong Kah and Corporation stations (contract J103), Jurong West and Bahar Junction stations (contract J105) and Jurong East interchange (contract J110). In total, there should be approximately 13 civil works contracts for the line. To date 5 of these contracts have been floated and 1 contact - J102 - has been closed.

Contract awards can be expected approximately 6 months after the closure of the tender while tender of the remaining contracts should be expected to be completed by the year-end. Once the contracts have been awarded, a ground breaking ceremony will be held - potentially some time after the first quarter of 2020. This is when construction along the line will begin to ramp up in intensity. In the meantime, advanced work contracts are underway to facilitate the relocation of utilities, with the bulk of these contracts due for completion by September 2020.

Bahar Junction

We have noticed that there were a lot of questions regarding the design and arrangement of Bahar Junction station based on the illustrations from LTA and media. Here's our take on how it may look like, and how it will operate.

This illustration was shown in one of our previous post. The speculated plan is based on the operating diagrams shown in LTA's promotional video on YouTube as well as a diagram on The Straits Times. We expect that there will only be 3 platforms at the station, all on the same level to facilitate transfers without the need to transverse through lifts and escalators. However, many readers may notice the lack of direction service on some directions, namely from Boon Lay/Jurong Pier towards Tengah/Choa Chu Kang (CCK), from Tengah/CCK towards Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and from NTU towards Boon Lay/Jurong Pier.

Previously we looked at how the Jurong Region Line (JRL) may weave its way through to Jurong East & West Coast. Today we look at how it would weave itself to its other 2 terminals - NTU and Jurong Industrial Estate.
