J103 - An update in Q1 2025

The two stations being constructed under contract J103 in end-Q1 2025.

Contract J103 is a critical contract in the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL), owing that this contract is responsible for the construction of the reception tracks that connect the depot to the mainline. Without this critical connection, trains from the depot will not be able to access the main line for testing or for revenue service. Works through the past quarter have seen some milestones being achieved - namely the semi-completion of the main line viaduct span across the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), the commencement of escalator installation at both stations under the contract as well as interior fit out works taking place. We'll go through these developments in greater detail after the jump.

J103 / Hong Kah, Corporation & Reception Tracks - A 2024 progress report

Stations of contract J103 seen at the end of 2024.

We're on a roll to wrap up progress made on the Jurong Region Line (JRL) through the 12 months of the year. This series began with contract J101 for the Tengah depot and was followed by contract J102 for Choa Chu Kang, Choa Chu Kang West & Tengah stations. We'll now continued on to contract J103 for Hong Kah and Corporation stations & the connecting Reception Tracks that link the main line with the depot.

Contract J103 has done well on the station building front but suffers on the viaduct construction aspect. The station buildings at both Hong Kah & Corporation have advanced to the stage of installation of the station roof frame and subsequent roofing works. However, there remain large gaps in the viaducts where spans were not yet constructed or viaduct piers were still being built. Of importance though, is to note that the former joint venture between Eng Lee & Wai Fong was affected by the former's financial performance which ultimately saw the company shut down, leaving the latter to carry on with the project as the sole contractor. More on these issues after the jump.

J103 - Hong Kah & Corporation update Q2 2024

Hong Kah & Corporation stations as seen in end-Q2.

Contract J103 has seen some of the greatest progress in station construction while at the same time, the slowest of viaduct progress among the first phase of the Jurong Region Line (JRL). Over the past quarter, Corporation station has emerged as the most complete along the line while Hong Kah's stagnated progress has finally made some headway. The viaducts however, were still far from completion - a critical component of the line and its operation, given that the viaducts under the purview of the contract also connect the main line with the depot. We'll explore the progress made under the contract over Q2 in greater detail after the jump - do be fair warned, this post is highly picture-intensive.

J103 - Hong Kah & Corporation update Q1 2024

18 March 2024 - A view of Corporation station as at end-Q1.

Contract J103 involves the construction of 2 stations along the Jurong Region Line (JRL) as well as viaducts between them, including the reception tracks connecting to the JRL depot at Tengah. The contract abuts neighbouring contracts J101, J102 & J105. Formerly being built by a joint venture between Wai Fong & Eng Lee, two local contractors, the contract is now solely anchored by Wai Fong. Eng Lee, unfortunately, had underwent liquidation due to its financial position. Nonetheless, remaining contractor Wai Fong has managed to keep the project going while slowly making progress on various fronts.

J103 - Corporation update Q3 2023

16 September 2023 - A view of progress at the station at the end of Q3 2023.

Hey there, thanks for putting up with the team being on vacation the last few days. It's been good to have a bit of a break and for the majority of the time we'd been on vacation had scheduled posts in our absence. But we're ready to get back into our regular quarterly updates and with an upcoming November snapshot in a few weeks' time, so do get ready for those.

Today we're looking at the progress made at contract J103's Corporation station. To date, the Land Transport Authority has not confirmed the station names or put them up for voting/suggestions as they had done with other lines previously. We're wondering if they will be doing the same for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) and Cross Island Line (CRL), or if they will ultimately simply decide on the names themselves. The last round where members of the public got to vote for or suggest station names was on the Circle Line stage 6 (CCL6) back in 2017 - 6 years ago.

Nonetheless, the lack of a confirmed station name has not hindered progress over at Corporation station's site. Over the past quarter, work has progressed to finish up the majority of the concourse slab with works beginning on the concourse level columns towards the end of the quarter. Viaduct piers on either side of the station were also in progress, with the viaduct segment launching taking place on the eastern side of the station. Preparation works were being undertaken ahead of the launching gantry's eventual installation atop the piers as well.

J103 - Corporation update Q2 2023

28 May 2023 - A view eastwards of the Corporation station and viaduct piers. Tengah depot
can be seen in the background.

Besides being responsible for the construction of reception tracks to the depot, contract J103 also covers the construction of Corporation station. The station sits right at the end of the reception tracks from the west, which will branch off the main line before elevating across the main line and Pan Island Expressway (PIE) to swing back to the Tengah depot. As such, the piers east of Corporation station feature a rather different design to carry 4 trackways instead of the usual 2. Construction of the station itself, located in the road median of Jurong West Avenue 2, features a slight differing design from that of neighbouring stations as well. Rather than using rounded piers, this station uses two squarish columns that support the concourse deck. More after the jump!

J103 - Corporation Q1 2023 progress

5 February 2023 - An aerial view of the Corporation station site.

Contract J103 was one of the first contracts for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) to be awarded. One of the stations under this contract is Corporation station located next to the site of the former Jurong Junior College. Work on the station has been progressing steadily with crossheads for the station piers being constructed. This will serve to support the station's concourse level via T-beams which will be installed between the crossheads, forming the flooring of the said level.

JRL1 Construction update - Q3 2021

8 September 2021 - A view of the Choa Chu Kang interchange site as seen from an MRT train.

It has been a few months since our last update and unfortunately, there has not been too much progress on the line's construction. Majority of the works are still focused on the preliminary stages of utility diversion and site preparation. At some sites, there has not been much visible progress while others show a bit more visible work. In this update we'll do our best to give an overall summary of the progress.

Contract tendering update - J102, J103, J110 & J106

The contract tendering process for the Jurong Region Line (JRL) civil contracts began last October with the release of tender for contract J101 for the construction of the depot to be located in Tengah. Since then numerous other tenders have been floated, of which the tenders for 3 contracts have been closed - contracts J102, J103 and J110.

Contract J102 is for the construction of Choa Chu Kang, Choa Chu Kang West and Tengah stations on the JRL. It also includes addition & alteration (A&A) works to the existing Choa Chu Kang station on the North South Line. Tender for this contract closed on 22 February and a total of 10 contractors have made bids.

Pre-construction - Corporation

The area where Corporation station is to be built is currently a semi-developed area. On one side sits the Jurong West estate and former campus of Jurong Junior College, while the other is currently a green field which will be developed in time to come. A render shared by MP for the area, Mr. Desmond Lee, shows buildings developed by the Jurong Town Council being connected to the future station.

Contract tendering update - J101, J102, J103, J105, J110

Following the official announcement of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) in May 2018, the tendering process for the civil contracts began around November last year. To date several large civil works contracts have been floated for tender.

Contract list as of 18 February 2019.
These include the civil works contracts for the construction of Tengah depot (contract J101), Choa Chu Kang interchange, Choa Chu Kang West and Tengah stations (contract J102), Hong Kah and Corporation stations (contract J103), Jurong West and Bahar Junction stations (contract J105) and Jurong East interchange (contract J110). In total, there should be approximately 13 civil works contracts for the line. To date 5 of these contracts have been floated and 1 contact - J102 - has been closed.

Contract awards can be expected approximately 6 months after the closure of the tender while tender of the remaining contracts should be expected to be completed by the year-end. Once the contracts have been awarded, a ground breaking ceremony will be held - potentially some time after the first quarter of 2020. This is when construction along the line will begin to ramp up in intensity. In the meantime, advanced work contracts are underway to facilitate the relocation of utilities, with the bulk of these contracts due for completion by September 2020.
