Contract J106 entails the construction of Toh Guan, Jurong Town Hall and Pandan Reservoir stations. Over the past quarter, the most changes can be seen over at Toh Guan station with the formwork for the first station pier's concourse level crosshead can be seen. At Jurong Town Hall however, things were a little slower with casting work continuing over at the concourse level slab. Pandan Reservoir station saw similar progress, with work still mostly focused on the street level foundations and underfloor cable troughs. We'll dive deeper into the works at the various sites under the contract.
JE4 - Toh Guan
Toh Guan station is sited between the existing North-South Line (NSL) tracks on approach to Jurong East station and existing HDB apartment blocks. Directly below the future station is Jurong East Central, with barely sufficient room to fit in station exits on either side of the road. The contractors though, have made the site work in the initial stages of construction for the station's foundations. Gradually over the past quarter, the station's piers have began to take shape with the columns becoming more prominent. Entering the next stage of construction called for the installation of formwork for the casting of the concourse level crossheads that will support the slab above, allowing passengers to access the platform. Thus this past quarter has also seen the commencement of road closures to facilitate the delivery and installation of the 26-metre long forms that will enable the team to begin casting works in Q2.

Work on the viaduct approach to the north of the station have seen the completion of foundation works for the pier columns. With the pile caps cast, the sheet piles were removed from the excavation sites over the past quarter and backfilling works began. The next stage of construction will see work on the pier columns commence to produce a line of piers along Jurong East Central. Just before the viaduct veers off to the west, a portal pier will be constructed straddling the northbound carriageway to enable the line to swing out over the Pan Island Expressway (PIE).

The crossing over the PIE requires longer spans without support in between, calling for the construction of a special span. Larger viaduct piers are being constructed in the PIE median and on the embankment, just next to the flyover connecting Jurong East to Bukit Batok. Over the past quarter, the pier in the median of the expressway has been growing gradually, whereas the pier on the embankment has seemed to stagnate.

Across the expressway, viaduct segment launching has commenced. Interestingly, a double celled single box girder is used for the construction of the viaduct here. Elsewhere along the Jurong Region Line (JRL), single celled box girders are used for each trackway. A double celled box girder means that two tracks can be supported on a single segment, without any gaps in between the trackways that is present with single celled box girders. The lifting mechanism is therefore larger to cater for the larger load of a single box girder. Construction to complete the crossheads of other viaduct piers in the vicinity also continued through the quarter.

The viaducts south of the Toh Guan station continue along Jurong East Central up to the contract boundary with contract J120 for the Jurong East Integrated Transport Hub & associated viaducts. Works here were less advanced compared to those north of the Toh Guan station, with foundation works taking place along the stretch through the past quarter.

JE6 - Jurong Town Hall
The next station in the contract is Jurong Town Hall further south. Construction progress here has proceeded a little slower, with construction work focusing on the concourse level slab. The casting works progressed towards the southern end of the station over the past quarter. Viaduct pier columns were also partially cast on either end of the station. The launch gantry sections which were delivered to the station site remain in the same locations that they were delivered to over the quarter.

JE7 - Pandan Reservoir
The final station along phase 2's southern end has seen slow progress over the past quarter. On close inspection, it may even appear to be the same. Progress has been painfully slow. By comparison, work on the tail tracks running parallel to West Coast Road appear to be progressing at a quicker rate. Over Q1, several more viaduct pier columns have appeared along the work site.

Progress over the quarter has been the greatest at the northern end of the contract, with most of the piers completed near Toh Guan station. As the contract approaches further south towards Pandan Reservoir, the level of progress reduces. We look forward to seeing how progress continues through in Q2 and will be back to provide a subsequent update.
