Before we know it, May has come and gone. Perhaps the month felt a little shorter due to the vacation that some of us took during the month. That said, the heat has been relentless over the past month. We're sure that the contractors on the Jurong Region Line (JRL) would have been feeling that - figuratively & literally. The good news is that there has been a significant amount of promising progress made through the various contracts. We'll take a look at this is slightly greater detail after the jump.

Phase 1
With the clock ticking till the completion of works are due, contractors have been rushing to make headway and meet deadlines. Some trial assemblies of architectural finishes have been implemented at various stations, in addition to the ongoing installation of various utility and electrical systems.

Tengah depot (Contract J101)
In a nutshell: Progress appears to have been made on structural elements of the workshops, including the bus parking structures and various connecting bridges within the depot site. However, it does not appear that any interior fit out works are in progress at the moment. Track laying equipment was seen on site, however the tracks have yet to connect to the lines within the workshop areas.

JS1 - Choa Chu Kang (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Roof frame installation over the new platforms continued, with the western-most platforms receiving the frames as well. One section the frame near the northern end of the North-South Line (NSL) platform was also equipped with a trial assembly of the cladding to be used on the edge of the roof. Within the existing NSL station, there were several small additions to the station in preparation of modification works to come. On the viaduct front, parapet wall installation works were ongoing for the few remaining sections which had yet to be completed - one section above Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4 and the over run section north of the station.

JS2 - Choa Chu Kang West (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: All 6 pairs of diamond-shaped columns to support the roof frame had since been installed. Work to connect the 2 station exits had also taken place, with the podiums reaching the full design height. The next phase of exit podium construction would be for the installation of escalators and lift cars, along with roofing. Parts of the roof insulating layers were also being installed. Additionally, track works had reached the station, with the rails laid till just west of the station. It may be a while before works are able to continue through the station to continue on towards Choa Chu Kang station.

As part of Tengah Central has since been opened to vehicular traffic, it is now possible to gain a closer look at the station and viaducts from the south. Track laying works were in progress, with the first noise barriers to be installed along the line making an appearance along the reception track linking to the upper level of the station.

JS4 - Hong Kah (Contract J103)
In a nutshell: This station is likely to be the first through which tracks had been laid, with a locomotive seen on the reception track as it parked within the station. Elsewhere, the exit linked to the station through a connecting bridge was making significant progress with its roofing already installed.

JS5 - Corporation (Contract J103)
In a nutshell: The station building continued to take shape, with the exit podium on the northern side of the station making headway. With the structural elements in place, work was centred on the roof installation works for the podium and linkbridge. Inside the station, installation works were well underway for the services boom at platform level. Cladding was being installed along with other components such as speakers. Other internal features that could be made out included the installation of High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans to ventilate the platform area.

Phase 2
There is a little more breathing room for the phase 2 section of the line, given that this section will only open in the year following the first phase's operation. Nonetheless, construction of the stations in this phase have made significant progress. Presumably, all stations under contract J108 have commenced escalator installation works. Most stations under contract J109 have structurally reached the platform level as well, while Jurong East station has about reached its full design height.

JE1 - Tengah Plantation (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: Similar to Choa Chu Kang West station, this station is designed with 3 sets of escalators between the platform and concourse levels. However, installation works during the initial opening suggest that only 2 escalators will be provided for, with a metal staircase being installed within the pit for the third set. On the viaduct front, 4 spans remain for each bound to be completed by launch gantry Magnificent Mammoth which is anticipated to complete around July.

Escalator installation works had also commenced, with at least 2 escalators connecting the concourse and platform levels visible. With only 2 spans of viaduct remaining to be completed, parapet wall installation works have commenced.

Towards the north of the station, viaduct segment launching works were underway through the balanced cantilevered method. To the south of the station, viaduct pier crosshead construction was well underway, with one of the two portal piers since completed.

Tracks through Jurong East Integrated Transport Hub (Contract J120)
In a nutshell: The viaduct spans under the contract have mostly been completed and are in position, although the cast in-situ spans through the new Jurong Hub development will need further concrete pouring to build the spans out to the full design specifications. The sections through open air have seen progressive installation of the parapet walls.

JE5 - Jurong East (Contract J110)
In a nutshell: Columns supporting the station extension's roof have reached the top level above the upper platform. Works were underway for bridging the gap between the existing EWL Westbound track and the new station platform. Towards the end of the month, new fare gates were installed for a new, relocated fareline. Several ticketing kiosks were also relocated ahead of reconfiguration works at the concourse level. Viaduct span construction works saw the connection of the spans to the interfacing section with contract J120.

Phase 3 (South)
Phase 3's southern section has begun to become more prominent with sections of the viaduct taking shape. However, these are all north of the AYE and the area south of the expressway does not yet have any viaduct sections complete or in the span launching phase. The trend of station construction also follows closely, with stations located north of the AYE making the most progress.

JS9 - Enterprise (Contract J111)
In a nutshell: The station structure was coming together quickly, with works already focusing on the platform and trackbed level. Viaduct construction works on either end of the station building were also taking place at breakneck speed, with several spans since completed. Work on the sharp curve from Jurong Central Park to Jalan Boon Lay was underway, with viaduct segment launching taking place.

Phase 3 (North)
In comparison to Phase 3's southern section, the northern sector features a more consistent construction pace. All 3 stations within Nanyang Technological University (NTU) had large portions of structural works completed and significant stretches of viaduct spans launched. None of the 3 stations had yet seen viaduct spans connect to the station buildings directly yet, though. Some amount of works remain till any of the structures will be able to obtain basic structural completion.

JW3 - Nanyang Gateway (Contract J113)
In a nutshell: Following the earlier diversion of Nanyang Drive below the station, work had commenced on foundations for the remaining viaduct piers supporting the Choa Chu Kang-bound track. Casting was also underway for the platform level slab, with rebar for the staircase at the station's eastern end still showing.

JW4 - Nanyang Crescent (Contract J113)
In a nutshell: The station building had made progress with the entire platform level since built out. Work on the upper concourse level, which would feature linkbridges to 2 exits on either side of Nanyang Drive, was also substantially built. Works continued on viaduct span construction on either side of the station.

JW5 - Peng Kang Hill (Contract J115A)
In a nutshell: The station structure has since come up, with works now focusing on the platform level slab. Works are more advanced towards the northern end of the station building, where the upper concourse level will be located. Due to the vegetation in the way, we are unfortunately not able to get a clear look at the construction progress in detail. To the north, several viaduct spans have since been completed, with works ongoing for the span across the junction of Nanyang Drive & Nanyang Crescent.
