An aerial view of the Boon Lay Jurong Region Line station in early & end Q1. |
A lot has been happening at Boon Lay station on the East-West Line (EWL) as it prepares to be upgraded into an interchange with the upcoming Jurong Region Line (JRL). In addition to the new station being built, the existing station is undergoing several changes to cope with the increased passenger loads and commuter traffic. These works are being carried out under contract J106 which oversees the construction of the new station as well as the addition & alteration works to the existing EWL station. Milestones hit by the contract this past quarter include the completion of the roof frame installation, commencement of the construction of a replacement staircase within the existing station and the beginning of reinstatement works along Jurong West Street 64. We'll explore all these in greater detail after the jump.
JS8 - Boon Lay
The massive new JRL station looms over the existing viaducts of the EWL as the station progresses ever higher with the installation of the roof frame. Below the station, works also saw the rerouting of pedestrian footpaths, allowing a shorter route between the junction of Jurong West Streets 64 & 63 with the Jurong Point Shopping Centre. It is anticipated that by Q3, Jurong West Street 64 may be able to return to its old alignment, running beneath the new station structure.

JRL station structure
Through Q1, roof frame installation works continued with more and more segments of the roof frame being assembled over the station's concourse and platform levels. The design of the roof frame employs the use of V-columns, akin to those used at Hong Kah & Corporation stations, albeit much taller to span the height of 2 levels instead of 1. By the end of Q1, the frame's assembly had been completed and would likely proceed onto fit out works. One difference to note is that for other stations thus far, the lift shaft frames have made an appearance at the platform level before the roof frames were installed overhead. These have so far been absent from Boon Lay station.
At the lower levels - the concourse & mezzanine levels, works have been ongoing to create rooms through the installation of precast wall sections. This work continued on through Q1 as well.

JRL station Exit 5 podium
The new JRL station will see the addition of 4 new exits to the interchange complex. The first of these exits is located next to Jurong Point and will be numbered as Exit 5. Through the past quarter, the structure of the exit podium has grown from just being a base structure to reaching the mezzanine level.

JRL station Exit 6 podium
Works for the Exit 6 podium began to accelerate over the past quarter, with casting for the podium's structure taking place to increase the structure's height. Located next to block 664B, the exit will see a linkbridge connecting the exit with the station across the canal leading to the Jurong River.

JRL station Exit 7 podium
The podium structure for Exit 7 has been silently progressing through the end of 2024. In the past quarter, the structure has continued to take shape with the podium reaching mezzanine level height. By the end of the quarter, rebar for the side beams where the escalators will be installed was in place. Similar to Exit 6, this exit will also connect to the station via a linkbridge that spans across the same canal leading to the Jurong River.

Paid transfer connection
The paid transfer connection will see the existing EWL station platform extended further west, connecting to 2 banks of escalators and ending at 2 lifts that connect to the JRL platforms 2 floors up. Over the past quarter, steady progress has been made on the transfer linkway which has progressively inched eastwards from the JRL station structure towards the existing EWL station. En route, several plant rooms at ground level have been constructed.

EWL station modification works (Exit C)
During the middle of the quarter, Exit C at the existing EWL station was closed to allow for modification works to take place. These works will see an extra staircase being built to replace the existing staircase, which will make way for another set of escalators to be installed in its place. Following the closure of the Exit C corridor, which connects Jurong Point & the Boon Lay bus interchange with the concourse fare unpaid section, assembly for the metal staircase began. By the end of the quarter, the structure of the new staircase could be seen in place.

EWL station Exit D modifications
Exit D of the station had also undergone several changes, with works to push the access stairs out further towards Jurong Point mostly coming to an end. This will create a larger fare paid zone as the faregates will also be realigned further towards Jurong Point.

JRL viaduct works
With segment launching works completed, work on the JRL viaduct focused on completing the structure for handover to the trackworks contractor. These works included the assembly of the parapet walls, waterproofing layer and cable racks & troughs along the viaduct. The majority of these works were at the tail end by the end of the quarter, with all parapet walls assembled by then. Road infrastructure reinstatement works were slowly beginning by then, with these works commencing at the northern end of the contract, near the interface with contractor J105 at the junction of Jurong West Streets 64 and 65.

Contract J106 has seen much progress through Q1 in the lead up to viaduct handover to the trackworks contractor. As the station shapes up, the existing EWL station also begins to change with modification works commencing in earnest. A long road remains ahead, with the new staircase to be built, a new escalator to be fit in and a new lift to be constructed. We'll do our best to bring you up to date with all the goings-on over time. Do stay tuned for more updates coming your way!
