J120 Jurong East ITH |
September was a busy month for the Jurong Region Line (JRL), with another contract completing viaduct span launching works, bringing the total of contracts with completed viaducts to 6. The first train was also received for the line this month, with our friends at Land Transport Guru managing to capture the delivery of one of the first sets locally.
In terms of viaduct span construction, another contract has completed these works as well - contract J113 along phase 3 of the line. This brings the total contracts with viaduct span construction works completed to 6. By the end of the year, it can be expected that roughly another 2 contracts would have viaduct spans completed as well. All the details after the jump.
Phase 1
With approximately 2 years to go to opening day, works on phase 1 are chugging full steam ahead. Most stations along this section of the line are well into interior & exterior fit out works.
Rail laying works were also progressing with more and more stations seeing tracks laid within the stations. As work progresses, by end September only 5 sections of tracks remained to be laid within the station zones. The section between Corporation and Hong Kah stations and the depot will be the biggest zone to be completed.

Tengah depot (Contract J101)
In a nutshell: Various sections of the depot were still under construction, despite the delivery of the first J151 train set being accomplished in the middle of the month. In particular, works continued on top of the rolling stock workshop for bus parking lots above. Fit out works continued for the administration building, with more glass facade panels being added to the building. Further panels were added to the stabling shed as well, with red and orange tints. As civil works complete, works will progressively switch to fit out works.

Choa Chu Kang (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Track laying works have not progressed in the area thus far, with the rails ending at the same location as in the previous update in August. Other works were underway at the station, with new ceiling panels being added under platform 3 of the LRT station. Additional lighting and signboards were noted on the North-South Line (NSL) platform. Base mounting plates for the platform screen gates were also observed on the new shared platform between the NSL and JRL.

Choa Chu Kang West (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: The station and its 2 exits had achieved basic structural completion. Tracks for both bounds of the line had been installed and final gauging completed. This also meant that the tracks and sleepers were cast into final position with the various slabs supporting the tracks completed. Rebar for the guard plinths, the concrete sections slightly raised parallel to the rails, was still in place and yet to be cast. Along the length of Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3, reinstatement works for the roadway were in full swing as well.

Tengah (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: With the opening of new housing precincts comes new vantage points. The newest one in Tengah allows us a decent view, the closest yet, of the Tengah Central station. From here, it could be observed that the station's roof was nearly completed and rain shelters were being added at the ground concourse level as well. Along parts of the viaduct that would be adjacent to a future medical facility, the first noise barrier for the line had been installed. Online, we also noted that the contract had achieved basic structural completion of all stations and viaducts under the contract, a milestone achievement.

In a nutshell: The new vantage point also allowed for great views of Hong Kah station. The completed tracks could be observed, with the track slabs fully cast and third rail installed. Certain sections even had the third rail protective cover installed. Closer within the station area, signals for the line could be seen. South of the station, viaduct construction works still continued although the crossings over the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) had been completed.

In a nutshell: With viaduct span construction works completed in the vicinity of the station, it appeared that the viaduct sections had been handed over to the trackworks contractor. However, no rails had been laid on the section of viaduct yet. Works continued within the station for interior fit out works, including what appears to be a passenger service centre near the exit adjacent to the housing estate.

Gek Poh (Contract J107)
In a nutshell: With the station's roof frame completely installed, work has transited to the installation of the various layers of insulation. The base layer has been added at the northern end before progressively being installed moving southwards. A second reflective layer will be added atop before the final roofing layer which should include ridges to direct water towards the collection gutter. Tracks on both bounds have been installed and a works train was parked within the station.

Phase 2
Contracts within phase 2 were also moving at a rapid pace, despite not all stations having the various facilities being fit out yet. Stations under contract J108 in particular, were further along in construction as compared to those under other contracts in the phase. Track works had yet to commence for the phase.

JE1 - Tengah Plantation (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: Installation of the final layer of roofing was underway for the main section of the station, leaving portions overhanging the plant rooms to be completed. Works were also underway for the linkbridge connection to Plantation Plaza, with the pier supporting the adjoining link already cast. As part of the contract, a dedicated drop off point serving Plantation Plaza has been completed, although not yet opened as of end September. Over on the other side of the station, exit works were in progress for the station exit serving Plantation Grange estate. And across the junction, the completed viaduct sections connected to those built under neighbouring contract J102. The launch gantry, Magnificent Mammoth, since lowered sat on the closed roadway. Disassembly works will continue through to November. Parapet installation works for the remaining viaduct spans were in progress, with approximately 3 spans for each bound remaining to completion.

JE2 - Tengah Park (Contract J108)
In a
nutshell: Works at the station are largely focused on the interior. The presence of noise barriers along Bukit Batok Road, however, severely restrict the sight lines into the station itself. We have observed that equipment used to lift escalator sections into place has shifted from the northern end of the station to the southern end, indicating that escalator installation at the top half of the station has been completed. Louvres were also noted to have been installed along the bottom portion of the roof, running parallel to the trackbed.

JE3 - Bukit Batok West (Contract J108)
In a
nutshell: Similar to Tengah Park station, most of the works appeared to be focused on the station's interior. Likewise, obstructed sight lines made it difficult to pick out what exactly had been taking place within. Nonetheless, works to complete the linkbridge across the PIE had been accomplished and the bridge now connects to the exit podium within Yuhua estate. Parapet wall installation works along the viaduct span sections near the station had also been completed.

JE4 - Toh Guan (Contract J109)
In a
nutshell: Works at the station were at the platform level, although the actual platform had yet to be cast. The framework and rebar for the various components, however, were in place. On either side of the station, viaduct span construction works also continued. The section north of the station was substantially completed, with only 3 to 4 spans remaining per bound. Viaduct span construction works south of the station still had a long way to go till the viaduct reached the interface with contract J120.

Tracks through Jurong East Integrated Transport Hub
(Contract J120)
In a
nutshell: The viaduct spans through the integrated transport hub (ITH) were completed, with parapet wall installation works also coming along. As part of the contract, a pedestrian bridge is being constructed to link the two podiums of the ITH above the existing rail lines. Work had commenced on the bridge's span using the incremental launching method. In this method, the bridge span is slowly inched out across the supports bit by bit.

JE6 - Jurong Town Hall (Contract J109)
In a
nutshell: The roof frame for the station had largely been installed, save for portions overhanging the plant rooms that had a little more work required. Parts of the roof insulation layers were also being installed. Towards the south, viaduct span launching works were progressing as the launcher neared the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE). We are unsure if the launcher will be used to cross the expressway, given the extensive length of the span and the absence of a supporting pier in the middle of the expressway. North of the station, parapet wall installation had commenced for completed sections of the viaduct span. In the area around Jurong East station, launching works were continuing on as well, albeit using the balanced cantilevered launching method.

JE7 - Pandan Reservoir (Contract J109)
In a
nutshell: The majority of the station's platform level had since been cast. Most of the building structure was still covered with scaffolding and construction netting, likely to be progressively removed following the completion of casting works. On either side of the station, viaduct piers were being prepared for eventual segment launching works which would likely be commencing soon. A series of portal piers just south of the station were having the crossheads cast to allow the line to make the 90-degree turn onto West Coast Road, along which the line will run once the West Coast Extension is completed in the early 2030's to West Coast Cross Island Line station.

Phase 3 (South)
Works along the southern segment of phase 3 were a mixed bag, with contract J111 being the more advanced of the two contracts. Station buildings here were visibly taking shape, up to the platform levels. The stations under contract J112 were further behind, with the station structures slowly building up, but not to the level that could give you an idea of the full station structure to come.

JS9 - Enterprise
(Contract J111)
In a nutshell: Along Jurong West Street 64, most works for the viaduct spans were completed, with parapet wall installation well underway. The site next to Jurong Safra was being levelled out for the Temporary Staging Area (TSA) to support track works that would be coming up. The viaduct spans from the contract boundary with contract J106 formed a nearly continuous stretch to Enterprise station, with gaps of only 2 half-spans remaining. Further south after the station, there remained gaps of approximately 4 spans on each bound till the junction with International Road.

A sixth was in progress with the lifting frames erecting the precast segments. Viaduct span construction was completed for approximately 5.5 spans just south of neighbouring Tukang station, with another 4 in progress.

Viaduct span construction along this phase had made headway, with contract J113 completing the launching of viaduct segments. All that remained was the bonding of several spans that were completed by using the trestle method. Over at contract J115A, only approximately 9 spans remain to be completed.
JW3 - Nanyang Gateway (Contract J113)
In a nutshell: The last viaduct spans for the contract completed segment launching this past month. Effectively, viaduct span construction is completed with no further segment launching works to take place. The spans, however, will need to be connected to the other existing spans already in place and these works will continue till completion. Elsewhere, parapet wall erection works were taking place. At the station, work continued on the roof frame installation, with the gutter segments being delivered to site for installation as well.
