Into the fourth quarter of 2024 we go. Work at the various sites of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) continues to chug along with different sites focusing on different stages of work. We bring a brief update of the progress made since the last update in September 2024.
|
A short summary of the various station construction statuses as of October 2024. |
Phase 1
"Time goes by... so slowly..." said no one, except Madonna in her song Hung Up. We experience it differently though, with time going by really quickly. The contractors for phase 1 of the line must surely be feeling the pressure as deadlines loom ahead as the pace of work picks up. With several of the stations receiving their roof structures in, others are getting the plant rooms at platform level built. Viaduct construction is well underway with the last few remaining sections approaching completion under contracts J106 and J107, while other wider gaps still remain for contracts J102, J103 and J105.
Tengah depot (Contract J101)
In a nutshell: Work continues to progress at the site, with the operations control centre (OCC) building taking shape as more floors are added to the structure. The services bridge that connects cabling and pipes connecting utility lines from the load centre to the workshops and stabling sheds has made progress with most of the spans since installed. Several more tracks can be seen laid out within the project site, including the test track along the western end of the depot.

Choa Chu Kang (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Since the opening of the new concourse-to-platform link at the northern end of the station, the former upriding escalator at this end has been cordoned off, together with the former staircase. Hoarding was being put up ahead of the structure's disassembly and subsequent demolition. The area where the former interim shops stood has been reconfigured with a winding path beneath the existing and new stations allowing commuters to access Choa Chu Kang Loop. Along the way, some glimpses of the newer sections of the station can be seen.

Choa Chu Kang West (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Viaduct construction works were in full swing along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3, along which the station is sited. The first span connecting to the portal piers at the junction with Choa Chu Kang Way has about been completed and the machinery is likely to be disassembled and relocated to the next pier for the works to commence there. Further west, launch gantry Mulan was in the midst of completing a span across the junction with Choa Chu Kang Avenues 4 and 5. 7 spans remained to be constructed by the gantry before its decommissioning, at the time of visit.

Mainline viaducts between JS4 & JS5 and Reception tracks to depot (Contract J103)
In a nutshell: By the end of the month, viaduct segment launching works had commenced on span across the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) for the main line viaduct. The western reception track spans were making good progress towards structural completion, with the casting of the crosshead for a movement & expansion joint pier nearing completion. However, several piers for the eastern reception tracks were still missing or were still stuck at the foundation level, with no columns cast yet. There remains much work to be done before structural completion can be attained.

In a nutshell: Road realignment has been taking place in the vicinity of the station to allow construction to progress onto the next stage of work - construction of the station's exits. This station will now feature 3 exits, with an exit near the former Jurong Junior College campus since deferred. While the lift shafts have been installed in the station, escalator installation had yet to commence. The viaducts to the west of the station had made significant progress with only the portions nearer to the station to be completed.

Jurong West (Contract J105)
In a nutshell: The station utilises a Y-column design for its roof structure, unlike the stations under contract J103. In total, there are 6 pairs of Y-columns that support the roof structure, with all 6 pairs installed. Roofing works were underway along with piling for the station's 3 exits. Viaduct construction still continues as the station has yet to be connected with any viaduct spans. Several spans remain to be completed near the station building and near the junction with Jalan Bahar & Jalan Boon Lay. Parapet wall installation has made decent headway along the completed sections of viaducts towards Bahar Junction station.

Bahar Junction (Contract J105)
In a nutshell: The main station building saw the commencement of roof structure installation works while the satellite building was still focused on works at the concourse level. Casting works for the connecting linkbridge was underway with the structure beginning to take shape at concourse level. Viaduct span construction was continuing at the busy junction, with the Choa Chu Kang-bound trackway nearly completed for its portion of the Y-junction. Work still continued along the Jurong Pier-bound trackway as several gaps remained where segments were yet to be launched.

Boon Lay (Contract J106)
In a nutshell: Station construction works saw the casting of the concourse slab over the existing East-West Line (EWL) viaduct take place, bridging the two separate halves of the station together. The central portion of the station still had some casting work remaining at the concourse level slab on the northern side while works progressed to the platform level on either end of the station. The first pair of V-columns to support the roof structure began installation at the southern end of the station as well. Eventually there would be approximately 7 pairs of these V-columns. Approximately 3 to 5 pockets of viaduct segments remained to be launched for all viaduct span construction under the contract to be completed.

Tawas (Contract J107)
In a nutshell: In this section of the contract, the southern span of the PIE crossing had been completed while casting for the pier supporting the span on the northern side of expressway was completed. Works would soon shift towards the northern side where the process would be repeated again to bridge the gap between the piers. Station building construction saw the plant rooms at platform level being cast while segments of the roof structure were also seen on site, awaiting installation. Along the viaduct south of the station towards Gek Poh, parapet wall installation had begun.

Phase 2
This picture might sound familiar to you - that one over-achiever in class that likes to show off, peacocking their stuff. You know, that kid, the teacher's pet that always got the highest marks in class. This phase has one such station in Tengah Park which has progressed so quickly that it sticks out like a sore thumb. The rest of the sections along this phase are a little more chill, a little more laid back in the pace of works, keeping to a somewhat reasonable rhythm with the 2028 deadline in mind.
JE1 - Tengah Plantation (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: The station's trackbeds are ready but work almost appears to be on hold - likely waiting for the launch gantry Magnificent Mammoth to complete the connecting viaduct spans on the station's eastern end. Once these are completed, the gantry will likely march through the station to complete the remaining spans on the western end of the station to the contract boundary with contract J102. The works along this section are expected to last till Q1 2025 as seen in a recent update on the contract's Telegram channel. Supports can be seen at the station's eastern end, likely to aid in supporting the weight of the launch gantry as it rests on the station building's structure.

JE2 - Tengah Park (Contract J108)
In a
nutshell: Now onto that over-achiever, which has had part of its roof structure installed. The design of the roof structure for the phase 2 stations adopts yet another design that differs from those seen along phase 1 thus far, with an intricate tangle of diamonds and interconnecting diagonal struts. In the early part of the month, 4 pairs of diamonds that connect the roof structure to the concourse level were installed from the station's southern end. The roof structure was connected to two of these diamonds then. By the end of the month, the roof structure had connected to the tops of 3 pairs of the diamonds. Elsewhere, along the viaduct, parapet wall installation was trucking along with significant stretches of the walls installed along viaducts on either side of the station.

JE3 - Bukit Batok West (Contract J108)
In a
nutshell: Here, 8 pairs of the station's columns were completed up to the concourse level, with the remaining 2 pairs still existed at the base level. At the station's western end, works had progressed sufficiently to the casting of the underplatform & trackbed levels. Viaduct assembly was also advancing, with the crossing of Bukit Batok Road taking shape visibly. The launch gantry Rock Steady, previously used to construct the viaduct south of Tengah Park station was recently shifted nearer to the contract boundary with contract J109 in anticipation of launching atop piers there.

JE4 - Toh Guan (Contract J109)
In a
nutshell: Casting for 7 of the station's concourse level crossheads was completed, with an 8th about to begin towards the end of the month. As several of the crossheads had since been cast, installation of the connecting precast beams commenced. To the station's south, viaduct pier columns began to spring up along Jurong East Central to allow the line to climb over the existing EWL tracks en route to Jurong East. To the station's north, a significant section of viaduct had been completed on the northern side of the PIE, employing the use of several types of lifting frames for the works.
