And just like that, we're already in March! Gone are two months of the year and two-thirds of the first quarter of the year. The start of the year has been a rather busy one for the team professionally & personally, thus we apologise for the rather slow start to getting back to our regular schedule of posts. We hope that this snapshot of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) for February allows you a glimpse of the work done over the first few months of the year. Progress is being made, but there's still a fair bit of way to go - especially certain sections along phase 1 which do not yet have piers constructed. Without further ado, here's the February snapshot for the JRL!

Phase 1
Work has been making good progress, with the first sections of viaduct getting parapet walls installed and one of the stations seeing the delivery of the first section of roofing. Viaduct works are progressing well, with the more challenging portions beginning to take shape - the crossing of roadways & road junctions. We'll cover these shortly, as we believe that this would make an interesting point of view and at the same time allow our readers to understand the complexities behind such construction sequences. Stay tuned for these upcoming posts!

Tengah depot (Contract J101)
In a nutshell: Towards the back of the depot area, the stabling sheds are beginning to take shape with the precast columns and beams being installed. There is some way to go yet, though. In the middle of the depot area, in the left zone are the maintenance workshops. It appears that ballast has been laid and sleepers put in for the future final layout of tracks to access the workshops.

JS1 - Choa Chu Kang (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: The JRL station is taking shape, with the track beds clearly visible now, especially from the existing North-South Line (NSL)'s southbound platforms. The section abutting the southbound NSL track has yet to fully take shape however. Viaduct construction next to the NSL viaduct is proceeding with segment launching as well.

JS2 - Choa Chu Kang West (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: The construction of the Choa Chu Kang West station utilises more precast components than at some other stations - here precast beams are used to form the concourse slab before further precast sections are laid atop before the flooring slab is poured. Several viaduct piers remain to be constructed on either side of the station as well.

JS2A - Forest Hill (Contract J102, provisional future station)
In a nutshell: This is the first 'JRL station' to be connected to a viaduct span. Launch gantry Mulan has completed span construction for both the Jurong Pier & Choa Chu Kang-bound tracks on the northern side of the future station. The gantry will likely move further east to commence construction of the viaduct spans towards Choa Chu Kang West, stopping before the special crossing over Brickland Road which has been steadily launching viaduct segments with lifting beams using the balanced cantilevered method.

JS3 - Tengah (Contract J102)
In a nutshell: Works at the station are currently at the upper platform level - mostly obscured by launch gantry Gaia which is advancing viaduct span construction towards the station. However, portions of the station structure are still visible.

18 February 2024

JS4 - Hong Kah (Contract J103)
In a nutshell: The station work has progressed to the concourse level, with concrete wet works underway. To the south of the station is a rather large section devoid of any viaduct piers that show the amount of work that remains at this location. Adding onto the pressure is the fact that this section is linked to the depot via reception tracks to be built under this contract.

JS5 - Corporation (Contract J103)
In a nutshell: Corporation is the first station on the JRL to receive a section of the station's eventual roof frame. Sitting next to the station, the metal frame allows us to see how the roof will be installed and supported in time to come.

JS6 - Jurong West (Contract J105)
In a nutshell: Jurong West station has made great strides ahead with the casting of most of the columns at concourse level completed. Horizontal beams are the next up before the rest of the platform level slab is cast. Work is also underway for the casting of the portal beam near the junction of Jurong West Avenues 2 & 4 with Jalan Boon Lay & Jalan Bahar.

JS7 - Bahar Junction (Contract J105)
In a nutshell: The amount of activity going on at the station site is astounding with foundation works in progress for the link bridge, casting of various viaduct pier crossheads & station portal beams and launching of viaduct segments all taking place concurrently. With the formwork removed from the satellite station's northern portal beams, we can see that precast segments will be used for the concourse level in a manner that will be similar to how the viaducts are designed. Such a design is not typical for a station.

JS8 - Boon Lay (Contract J106)
In a nutshell: Casting of the mezzanine slab for both sides of the station is progressing along. The southern section has also progressed up to the base of the JRL concourse level as well. Work is beginning to close the gaps in the constructed viaduct segments where the movement & expansion joint piers are located.

JW1 - Gek Poh (Contract J107)
In a nutshell: The station used prefabricated segments to form the "arms" that support the concourse slab. There are approximately 3 station piers which still remain to have these arms attached. Precast beams are then laid between these arms to form the concourse slab. For the time being, only the northern end of the station has these precast beams installed.

JW2 - Tawas (Contract J107)
In a nutshell: Work is focused at the platform level where the supporting column is first cast in the centre of the station. Thereafter, the crosshead is cast, followed by the crossbeams that support the platform slab of the station. Finally, precast beams are put into place to form the trackbed - the platform slabs have yet to be constructed on either side of the trackbed. South of the station, formwork is being removed from one of the two piers that support the special crossing over the Pan Island Expressway.

Phase 2
Works along phase 2 of the line are proceeding along well. The completion of some stations is on par with those along phase 1 of the project. However, the degree of viaduct span completion is lower than that of the phase 1 sections.

JE1 - Tengah Plantation (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: The eastern side of the station has begun casting the crossbeams that will support the platform level and is progressively moving further west. Work is also ongoing on the viaduct piers in preparation for viaduct span construction as the launch gantry Magnificent Mammoth inches closer to the station.

JE2 - Tengah Park (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: The station has nearly completed construction of the concourse level slab and some of the columns at this level have already been cast. Viaduct span construction continues southwards with launch gantry Rock Steady making progress towards the crossing of Bukit Batok Road.

JE3 - Bukit Batok West (Contract J108)
In a nutshell: Progress has been made along the station's southern line of columns which are now visible. Work has also commenced within YuHua for the construction of the exit across the Pan Island Expressway. Viaduct pier construction is progressing westwards from the contract boundary with contract J109 to the east.

JE4 - Toh Guan (Contract J109)
In a nutshell: Station pier columns are beginning to take shape with the first column wrapped in blue construction netting before casting works take place. In March, road closures are due to take place to allow the installation of formwork for the station concourse level crossheads to proceed. Further south, piling work is ongoing for the viaduct piers. To the north, the bases of the viaduct pier columns are beginning to peek out and will shortly begin their upward climb.

JE5 - Jurong East (Contract J110)
In a nutshell: Most of the columns for the station have now been cast. Work is underway to prepare for the casting of the concourse level slab which will further extend the footprint of the existing station. Progress has also been made at the entry plaza area where the elevated connection from the JRL upper platform will offer connection to all of the existing platforms.

Phase 3 (South)
The southern section of Phase 3 runs through more industrialised areas. Nonetheless, the line's infrastructure is beginning to take shape visibly.

JS9 - Enterprise (Contract J111)
In a nutshell: Several of the piers before the line reaches the station have been unveiled. Most of the columns at the station area are still being worked on.

Phase 3 (North)
This section would appear to be slightly further along than the southern phase with a stretch of viaduct already constructed. More numerous viaduct piers are also seen along this stretch than the southern section of phase 3.

JW3 - Nanyang Gateway (Contract J113)
In a nutshell: Caissons are visible for the station's foundations to be constructed. The viaduct piers near Hall 8 are about ready for viaduct span construction as well.
