J102 - Choa Chu Kang, Choa Chu Kang West, Forest Hill & Tengah update Q1 2024

With Q1 of 2024 coming to a close soon, we're beginning our quarterly updates on the Jurong Region Line (JRL). Last week, we covered the progress of Tengah depot over the first quarter, including the commencement of trackworks! Today, we'll dive a little deeper into the works taking place under contract J102 by Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co which includes 3 stations, approximately 4km of viaducts and a future shell station.

JS1 - Choa Chu Kang
Work at the station has progressed with the trackbeds for the JRL visible in the aerial views. Up close, casting works have progressed to the platform level. Works have also begun on casting of the new platform for the North-South Line (NSL)'s southbound track that will allow convenient cross-platform transfers to the JRL.

11 January 2024 - Work on the JRL station and new platform for the NSL at the southern end of

railings are still in place on the NSL viaduct.

Progress has also been made on the over run viaducts to the north of the station complex. Where previously a single viaduct pier had stood for the longest time, now stands a pair of viaduct piers. The second pier column was constructed and the column subsequently underwent the casting process. As of the end of Q1, the crosshead was still being cast.

The works also call for the modification of the existing NSL station. These works include the construction of a new set of stairs and escalators before the eventual dismantling and re-orientation of the upriding escalator at the station. These works can be seen from several of the openings between the concourse and platform levels of the station. Towards the end of the quarter, better views of the modification works at concourse level can be seen. The passenger service centre will be shifted from its current position and the farelines also moved to create a larger paid area within the station concourse. We will cover these changes in another, more detailed post, in time to come.

18 March 2024 - Part of the hoarding has since come down, unveiling the new section of the
reconfigured station. The passenger service centre will be located here, where the former shop
unit used to be located.

Viaduct construction south of the station has also progressed, with launching of precast segmental box girders (SBGs) progressing parallel to the existing NSL viaduct. The contractor has used hanger beams to launch the first set of SBGs from the piers and will thereafter be using mobile cranes to launch the remaining segments.

JS2 - Choa Chu Kang West
Works at the second station of the project are progressing well, with work now fully focused on completing the concourse level. Following this, works will begin on the station columns that will work to support the platform level above.

18 March 2024 - By end-Q1, the concourse level is largely completed with areas for the escalators
and lifts clearly marked out.

Works along the stretch of viaduct as the line turns onto Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3 will see the construction of 4 portal piers. By end-Q1, work had begun on the construction of the portal beams for 2 of the 4 piers. These portal piers will allow the JRL viaduct to navigate directly on top of the roadway while having sufficient support beneath to hold the viaduct in place.

JS2A - Forest Hill (name assigned by SGMC temporarily as the future station is currently unnamed)
The enigmatic station is one of the first to be connected to a mainline viaduct. Works have progressed eastwards from the future in-fill station and by the end of Q1, launch gantry Mulan had been relocated once again. This time, Mulan was working on the viaduct sections connecting this future station with Tengah station.

JS3 - Tengah
Being located in a greenfield site, there is a lack of vantage points with good views of the station. Nonethless, the team tried and tried and managed to find a spot with a suitably good view of the station, although from quite a fair distance away. As of the end of Q1, works are progressing on the upper platform level of the station.

4 March 2024 - Ultimately, it is simply easier to visit the JRL Project Information Centre to
receive an update on the progress of this station.

Work on the approach viaducts has also started to include parapet wall works. These are concrete segments which are attached to the side of the viaducts and provide space for electrical and signal cabling to be laid once trackworks begin. Over the quarter, a decent amount of the viaduct here has been equipped with the parapets. At certain locations along the line, these parapets will also house the noise barriers that will be installed.

The approach tracks at Tengah Junction, where the east and west routes converge will see a non-revenue service track that connects from Tengah Plantation station to Hong Kah station. To facilitate the construction of this turnout, concrete casting to create a deck upon which the tracks can be laid is required. These works are currently underway as of end-Q1.

18 March 2024 - Preparatory works underway ahead of deck casting - the gap between the two rows
of viaduct spans will be decked over with concrete to allow trains to change from one track to
another when returning to the Tengah depot.

Decent progress is being made along this section of the line under contract J102. We look forward to more progress over the next quarter and will be sure to bring updates when they are available.
