J113 - More piers in NTU | Nanyang Gateway update Q3 2023

Over the past 9 months since we last updated on the stations at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the various construction sites here have made some significant progress. Contract J113 for the construction of Nanyang Gateway and Nanyang Crescent  Jurong Region Line (JRL) stations has seen quick progress with several piers slowly climbing upwards as work progresses within the university. In our previous post, we covered the semi-completed piers near Nanyang Crescent station, thus this post will focus on the sites near to Nanyang Gateway station.

Station site
At the beginning of the year, the station site had implemented a road diversion that pushed Nanyang Avenue further north, towards Halls 10 & 11. This followed the completion of works to cover up the large drain that was present there and allowed for station foundation works to commence at the site of the former roadway.

In September, bored piling works were well underway at the site that will create the foundation for the station which will be directly above the roadway.

Viaduct site east
The viaduct site to the east of the station will see the line swinging south to connect with the viaduct at neighbouring contract J107, north of Tawas station. In the earlier part of the year, the site was rather nondescript with not much activity taking place.

However by September, one of the first piers here could be seen being constructed with the rebar skeleton being established first. Later on, the rebar was encased in formwork and casting would take place. As of September, only 1 pier has been noted to be under construction here.

Viaduct site west
To the west of the Nanyang Gateway station, work was also taking place on various viaduct piers that will connect the station with Nanyang Crescent station. The hive of activity is centred around the valley just in front of Hall 8. Earlier in the year works were in a rather initial stage with the site being prepared for construction.

By September, the beginnings of viaduct columns could be seen. In the middle of the month, the bottom halves of the viaduct columns had been completely cast, with further work on the upper halves still remaining. Due to the undulating topography of the area, the viaduct piers at this site will need to rise higher to meet the elevation required for approaching Nanyang Crescent station. As of September, approximately 4 piers were noted to be under construction here. With the pier at the eastern viaduct site and the others near to Nanyang Crescent station, NTU now has at least 9 piers at varying stages of construction that are fully visible.

Casting yard site
The casting yard for contract J113 is located in a shared space with the yard for contract J111 along Tractor Road. Since being set up, work has progressed to churn out precast segmental box girders for use in NTU to construct the JRL viaducts.

With several viaduct piers already being cast, it will be a matter of time before viaduct construction begins within the university. We look forward to further milestones being achieved for the third phase of the line and will be sure to bring you updates on these in due time.
