J108 - Tengah Park update Q2 2023

29 June 2023 - A view of viaduct & station pier columns at Tengah Park station site.

The past quarter (Q2 2023) has been a busy period for contractor McConnell Dowell over at contract J108 for the construction of stations and viaducts at Tengah Plantation, Tengah Park & Bukit Batok West. The portion of viaduct spans north of Tengah Park station up to the point where the line veers off Bukit Batok Road and into Tengah has been completed. Work on the station structure at Tengah Park has taken off with the columns visible at the street level before the concourse level is added in. A second launch gantry is also being assembled to commence viaduct span construction on the southern side of the station.

The section in which launch gantry Magnificent Mammoth will operate to construct the viaducts.

Magnificent Mammoth's progress as at end-April 2023.

April 2023
There are a total of 26 individual spans required for the viaduct section between Tengah Park & Tengah Plantation stations. As of end-April 2023, 6 of these spans had been completed or were in the process of being launched. The speed of construction definitely picked up since viaduct launching works commenced in January 2023 - initially at the speed of approximately 1 span a month.

Meanwhile, works at the station were progressing with the rebar stubs for the columns now visible on site. Slowly, more rebar was added to the columns at the northern edge of the station and the columns were wrapped with scaffolding & construction netting ahead of eventual casting.

Viaduct construction progress as at end-May 2023.

May 2023
By the end of May 2023, a further 2 viaduct spans had been added to the total spans in progress. This brings the number of spans constructed up to 8 spans of 26 required to connect the 2 stations together. The speed of construction was maintained at 2 spans per month.

2 June 2023 - Work in progress for the ninth span.

2 June 2023 - A second launch gantry on site at the southern end of Tengah Park station, awaiting
lifting into position for construction.

2 June 2023 - The oblong shaped piers will enable the transition between viaduct and station.
Unlike previous MRT lines, the viaduct spans are not constructed through the JRL stations.
Instead, the station structure itself will be designed with a trackbed portion in the structure to
support the trackways and allow trains to pass through without the need for constructing viaduct
spans through the station, allowing easier maintenance of structures.

2 June 2023 - Rebar for station columns installed. The columns are noticeably taller than before.

29 June 2023 - Further piers within Tengah new town are under construction and not yet ready
for viaduct span construction. The nearest one in this image does not yet have a crosshead cast.

Progress of viaduct construction as at end-June 2023. Any further progress is slightly constrained
by the lack of completed piers to connect viaduct spans to.

June 2023
As of end-June 2023, the launch gantry named Magnificent Mammoth had completed the remaining 2 available spans, bringing the total of spans constructed to 10. Following this milestone, the gantry will be taking a break as further viaduct piers are made ready. We expect that the northern-most piers of Tengah Park station will be expedited so that the viaduct connection can be completed, following which the gantry will be relocated to the northern end of the completed stretch to continue its journey towards Tengah Plantation station.
