J103 - Corporation update Q2 2023

Besides being responsible for the construction of reception tracks to the depot, contract J103 also covers the construction of Corporation station. The station sits right at the end of the reception tracks from the west, which will branch off the main line before elevating across the main line and Pan Island Expressway (PIE) to swing back to the Tengah depot. As such, the piers east of Corporation station feature a rather different design to carry 4 trackways instead of the usual 2. Construction of the station itself, located in the road median of Jurong West Avenue 2, features a slight differing design from that of neighbouring stations as well. Rather than using rounded piers, this station uses two squarish columns that support the concourse deck. More after the jump!

Station construction
Over Q2 2023, the station has progressed from casting of the station pier concourse level crossheads to installation of pre-cast concourse level beams. Once the pre-cast beams have been entirely installed, the casting of the concourse slab can begin. A layer of rebar is likely to be laid across and thereafter concrete casting takes place. Once this has been completed, the station columns can be cast and works proceed to the platform level thereafter.

Approach tracks
The approach tracks on the east side of the station are beginning to take shape with more viaduct piers emerging. The arrangement of the 4 tracks will be slightly complicated, but the main line tracks will be the outer-most tracks with the reception tracks taking up the middle. The main line will be ducking under the reception tracks and hugging the canal before eventually crossing the PIE to Hong Kah station as well. Over the past quarter, works have progressed sufficiently that the bored pile foundations are largely completed and works are transiting to construction of the pile caps and pier columns above that.

Between Corporation & Jurong West stations
Over the past quarter piers have gradually begun sprouting up with at least one being cast along this stretch. For the longest time, this area was devoid of any piers. With the number of piers being built constantly increasing, it is a good sign of progress.

In general, works are finally starting to progress. Out of all the contract for phase 1 of the line, this contract has been the last to begin viaduct construction as there have not been any significant spans of piers ready for segment launching thus far. With more piers being cast, hopefully this milestone can be attained in Q3 of 2023. We anticipate that the balanced cantilevered method will be used - thus far this method has seemed to be relatively slower in production rate as compared to using launch gantries which are great when used on straight sections of viaduct.
