Launch gantries on site

Plantation station and the Tengah junction in neighbouring contract J102 can be seen.

As construction work along the Jurong Region Line (JRL) progresses with several piers completed at contact J108 near Tengah Park, contactors John Holland & McConnel Dowell are preparing for the next phase of works. Spotted on site were the truss frames for a launch gantry.

A launch gantry is a component used in the erection of viaduct spans. Various methods can be used. On parts of the existing North-South & East-West Line (NSEWL), a full span method was used. Predominantly utilized on the original sections of the elevated lines, the Woodlands extension and the Boon Lay extension, this method involved placing an entire completed beam into the span between 2 piers.

However, another method for viaduct span construction is likely to be used for the JRL. Similar to that employed for the Tuas West extension, segmented box girders are used. The span is then constructed whilst being held under the launch gantry and all post-tensioning works are then carried out mid-air.

At neighbouring contract J102 at the Tengah junction where the east and west routes of the JRL meet, another launch gantry truss frame can be seen as well.

With the launch gantries now on site, it will only be a matter of time before the machines are lifted into the sky to begin works on erecting the viaduct spans. Do continue to watch this space as the viaducts begin to take shape.
