Contract J108 is the first of two contracts that cover three stations each - the other being neighbouring contract J109 which we'll be covering in the following post. Over the first three months of the year, work has been chugging along with viaduct spans taking shape and the station buildings slowly being cast. We take a closer look at the three stations under this contract - Tengah Plantation, Tengah Park & Bukit Batok West - in greater detail after the jump.

JE1 - Tengah Plantation
Over the first quarter, casting works at the station have begun at the platform & trackbed level with the works commencing at the southern end of the station. Gradually, works also commenced at the northern end. By the end of the quarter, casting works had included the middle section of the station where rebar installation work was being carried out ahead of concrete pouring works for the casting of the platform and trackbed structures.

were being installed at both ends of the station. Several beams were already cast at the southern
end of the station where the back of house mechanical & electrical plant rooms will be located.

26 January 2024 - Southern end of the station in early-Q1. Work was just beginning on the casting
of the support beams for the platform level plant rooms.

beams have already been cast while formwork and scaffolding are being installed progressively
towards the north.

18 March 2024 - Rebar installation followed ahead of casting of the structures, in end-Q1.

Viaduct construction works also continued on at the junction of Tengah Link & Plantation Crescent, with launch gantry Magnificent Mammoth switched into balanced cantilever mode. An extended viaduct span is used to bridge the wider gap between piers here, with segmental box girders (SBGs) being slightly taller to allow additional loads to be supported by the longer span.

Lastly, north of the station, a section of viaduct piers has since been prepared for span construction works with all the crossheads completed atop the pier columns. Hanger beams were installed atop some of the viaduct pier crossheads to launch the starter SBGs ahead of main span construction works subsequently.

JE2 - Tengah Park
The second station under the contract at Tengah Park has seen the casting of the concourse slab take place over the first quarter of the year. By the end of Q1, most of the concourse level columns at the southern end of the station had been cast. Additionally, most of the horizontal beams for the concourse slab were also cast by the end of the quarter.

On the viaduct span construction front, launch gantry Rock Steady had indeed made steady progress, advancing the span construction from approximately 11 completed spans to 17 completed spans. Should the work continue at this pace, it is likely that the launch gantry would reach the end of the section in Q2 of the year.

18 March 2024 - Viaduct span construction south of the station as at end-Q1.

JE3 - Bukit Batok West
Bukit Batok West is the slowest in progress of the three stations under the contract. Through the first quarter, progress has been made with the casting of half of the second row of piers that will support the station building at ground level. To do this, footings first needed to be constructed as part of the station's foundation and thereafter, rebar installed to create the core of the columns for the station. While the first two stations in the contract were already focused on works at the concourse slab level, this station was still concentrating on works at the ground level.

24 February 2024 - Bukit Batok West station in mid-Q1 with a second row of station pier columns
becoming visible.

18 March 2024 - Bukit Batok West station as at end-Q1.

Most of the progress here though, could be seen at the nearby crossing of Bukit Batok Road to the west of the station building. The viaduct piers in the road median were successfully cast and the precast SBGs fixed atop within the first quarter. With the SBGs in place, works will proceed to bond the SBGs to the piers permanently. Thereafter, works on advancing the special crossing spans can commence using hanger beams & lifting frames utilising the balanced cantilevered method.

26 January 2024 - Casting for the second of two piers in the median of Bukit Batok Road underway.

Further east, the pier at the contract boundary with contract J109 is a movement expansion joint pier. This allows the two neighbouring contracts to end their respective viaduct spans by supporting the spans on bearings which will be added between the pier crosshead and the bottom of the end SBG of the span. The pier furthest east was handed over to contract J109 for their works to install the bearing and erect the viaduct span. After the viaduct span is constructed, the pier will be handed back to contract J108 for continued viaduct construction works. Subsequent piers were also beginning to take shape.

18 March 2024 - The eastern-most viaduct pier, handed over to contract J109 for their viaduct
span construction works involving the pier as at end-Q1.

There is great progress being made by the contractors for J108 and their sub-contractors. This will become more evident as we explore contract J109's progress in Q1 next. Nonetheless, any progress is good progress and it will be interesting to see how construction continues with the viaduct and station structures taking shape. Do stay tuned for our next update which will be coming to you soon.
